Our History

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose more than 124,800 members in 134 countries are engaged in oil and gas exploration and production. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge providing opportunities to exchange information at in-person and online events and training courses, publications, and other resources.

SPE history in Ukraine started in 2010, when the Ivano-Frankivsk student chapter was established. During the International Conference, "East Meets West", which took place in April 2010 in Krakow (Poland) based on the Krakow Academy of Mining and Metallurgy named after S. Staszyc (AGH), the IFNTUNG delegation met with the President of SPE Alan Labastier and Secretary Melissa Shalty. SPE management expressed its readiness to help Ukraine in the development of SPE and to give permission to open an SPE student chapter based on IFNTUNG. The Chapter was driven by active students, taking part in East European events and organizing their events in Ukraine.

In 2014 SPE Ivano-Frankivsk Section was established and covered all the Ukraine, with more than 50 professional members. SPE Section and Student chapter activities and events lead to membership growth. It caused 2 new student chapters to be opened in 2017 in Poltava and 2018 in Kharkiv.

Together with student membership, the interest in SPE grew from professionals, and in 2021 new Kyiv Section was established.
In 2022 by joint decision of Ivano-Frankivsk and Kyiv Sections unated SPE Central Ukraine Section was established.
Today SPE Ukraine has a more than 100 professionals, leading industry development for sustainable future.
