  • 1.  The use of IOR and EOR Terms

To:  SPE Reservoir, Production and R&D Connect Communities

Some of you may remember that in the fall of 2023 a question was posted about the use of the terms IOR and EOR.  A link to the old discussion is:  https://connect.spe.org/discussion/the-use-of-terms-ior-and-eor.

A survey was posted, and responses were provided – after that, at the direction of SPE leadership, a committee was formed to review these terms and provide a way to reconcile the use of these terms for all SPE.  This committee has completed their review and recommendations for the SPE, and this has been provided in the form of an SPE Technical Report.

This "Technical Report" is open for public comment and can be found on JPT with the following link: JPT article is now live and posted here.

Please review and provide comment to the following link: the SPE Technical Report page

Comments to the SPE connect community sites are welcome, but the comments that will be reviewed and used to improve the "Technical Report" will come from feedback made to "the SPE Technical Report Page."

To the SPE Research and Development Technical Section - My Apologies - This Technical Report on the IOR EOR Terminology recommendations was complete last November, and I thought I had posted a link to the final Technical Report on this site, but apparently, I did not.

So, for those still interested in the results of this work here is a link to the final Technical Report.  spe-223930-tr-2.pdf

This is the new standard recommended and accepted by SPE leadership.  I hope this is helpful and informative.

After posting this link several friends have asked me to post something that provides a highlight or key recommendation of the report.  I decided that the following chart which is contained and justified in the report would be the most appropriate thing to share.

You will note that a new term has been added namely "Assisted Oil Recovery".  The Technical Report provided discusses the justification and rational that was used to generate this new term.  For the details, please read the Technical Report.  In addition, there are other charts and information in the Technical Report that bring clarity to this new term and the relationship of all the other terms (Primary Oil Recovery, IOR, Secondary Oil Recovery and EOR).
