Title: Data Science Frontiers – The Myth and Realities of supporting Upstream Technologies

Abstract:

In an era dominated by groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence advancements and the power of high-throughput computational architectures, cloud-based solutions have revolutionized decision-making processes. They have become the linchpin in analyzing petabytes of rich data sourced from pivotal industries, notably Oil and Gas. Amidst the whirlwind of global commodity price volatility, these innovations stand as beacons of hope—promising not just to streamline operations but to drastically cut down operational costs, skyrocket efficiencies, minimize risks, and uphold health and safety standards like never before.
Yet, this transformative journey hasn't been immune to myths and misrepresentations, often casting shadows of doubt over its potential. Despite these challenges, AI technologies have seamlessly woven themselves into the fabric of the oil and gas sector's operations. These technologies are now indispensable, empowering companies to harness vast volumes of information in real time and morph complex datasets into strategic insights.

In this pivotal discourse, Dr. Jayaram will unveil the transformative power of AI technologies through a series of compelling use cases. These instances not only highlight AI's profound impact on our business landscape but also underscore its role in elevating the sophistication of sub-surface operations and economic strategies within our industry.

The essence of our journey with AI transcends mere adoption; it's about fostering a profound comprehension of AI's unparalleled value and its boundaries. It's a clarion call to build a society and workforce that leverages AI as a cornerstone for advancement, steering clear of the pitfalls of myth and unrealizable expectations. This is our moment to redefine the future, making AI not just a tool for innovation but a catalyst for building a resilient and value-driven society.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Vikram Jayaram over the past 2 decades has advanced the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) both in industry and academia. His interests are in developing AI powered production systems for unconventional E&P and Manufacturing industries. His tenure includes Head of Data Science at the Pioneer Natural Resources where he over saw technology development that supported operations (Drilling, Completions, Production, Supply Chain, Field Development, Budgeting & Planning, and HSE). He was also a Principal Research Scientist for Sabre Corporation, where he architected the next generation revenue management systems utilizing AI / Game Theory models. He has also worked as a Sr. Research Geophysicist with Global Geophysical Services & also served as a Faculty/Scientist with the University of Oklahoma.

Vikram did his postdoctoral work at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center working on image reconstruction algorithms in nuclear imaging.  He has a Ph.D. & M.S. in Electrical Engineering and was awarded the prestigious NASA doctoral fellowship. He also interned at the Eastman Kodak Research Labs, National Aerospace Labs, and the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc).
He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in international conferences, journals, and patents. He has graduated over 250 students who are in the E&P industry with co-supervision of 35 MS/PhD degree candidates. He is a senior member of IEEE Signal Processing Society, SPE, AGU, SEG & technical Reviewer/Chair for several international conferences and journals in Signal Processing, Machine Learning, and Industrial automation. He is also an Associate Editor for SEG/AAPG Journal of Interpretation. Vikram is also a board member at the University of Oklahoma, University of Houston, and Texas.
