Abstract
The current commodity, M&A and capital markets are necessitating shifts in upstream company business plans to a model that does not require access to external capital and instead must focus on corporate profitability and returning capital to investors. With equity capital markets effectively shut for E&P companies to finance growth or acquisitions, the industry is turning to consolidation to more efficiently manage larger asset bases and realize economies of scale. Private equity-backed business models are having to adapt as well to a landscape with a less certain exit path that may require longer hold periods, larger balance sheets, operational excellence and a path to generating a return for investors through cash flow rather than through a strategic sale or IPO.
