    Abstract:

The repurposing of hypersaline Permian produced water for direct reuse has historically used dissolved air flotation (DAF) and oxidation + filtration-based treatment modalities. Presented here is a novel chelation-based technology where ferrous iron and other divalent ions are sequestered into chelation-surfactant micelles making these ions inaccessible to the water matrix. This results in substantially less solids waste, scale prevention, an enhanced oil-water separation, and improved brine compatibility with a wide range of friction reducers.

Speaker: Zacariah Hildenbrand, Ph.D. | LinkedIn is a partner of Medusa Analytical and Hilman Kraftwerks, and a director of the Curtis Mathes Corporation.

Dr. Hildenbrand's research has produced more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and textbook chapters. Dr. Hildenbrand has dedicated his career to unconventional fields of research in environmental and criminal forensics, as well as water analysis, treatment, and brine valorization. Some of his latest work is focused on optimizing the extraction of energy from unconventional reservoirs while simultaneously creating new revenue streams through mineral harvesting and chemical synthesis.

Moderator: Bruno Ramon Batista Fernandes | LinkedIn

Bruno Fernandes is an independent reservoir engineering consultant with more than a decade of experience in the development and application of modeling and numerical simulation for subsurface energy systems. Fernandes has authored or coauthored more than 50 journal and conference publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and  a bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering. An active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Fernandes currently serves as a Director for the Publications Subcommittee for the SPE Water Lifecycle and Strategy Technical Section.
