Professor of Petroleum Engineering

Abstract

This presentation provides an overview of physical processes yielding the permeability decline, including fines migration in production and injection wells in sandstones and carbonates during oil and gas production and emerging CO2 and hydrogen geological storage.

The presentation will then discuss the forces exerting detrital and authigenic clays from flowing oil, gas, and water – drag, lift, electrostatic, capillary, and gravity. Breach of torque / force balance yields fines detachment, mobilisation, migration, and pore straining, resulting in permeability decline. Description of the micro heterogeneity for the system rock-fluids-clays allows incorporating the torque balance into reservoir-scale transport model, allowing predicting well behaviour under fines migration. The presentation will show how flow visualisation tests, SEM images, and corefloods are used for well-behaviour prediction. It will further present field cases in Gulf of Mexico and brown fields of Malay basin, where the approach resulted in mitigation of oil productivity decline due to fines migration.

Biography

Pavel Bedrikovetsky is Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Adelaide. He holds BSc and MSc in Applied Mathematics, PhD in Fluid Mechanics, and DSc in Reservoir Engineering, all from Moscow Gubkin Oil-Gas University. Prior to joining the University of Adelaide in 2008, during 1991-1994 Pavel was a Visiting Professor at Delft University of Technology and at Imperial College of Science and Technology.

His expertise and research cover formation damage, CO2 and hydrogen storage, and gas-oil recovery. Pavel authors a seminal book on reservoir engineering and over 300 technical papers in international high-impact journals and SPE. He boasts 45-year industrial experience in Europe, US, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. His recent works encompass derivation of analytical models, design of novel laboratory methods, inverse solvers, and laboratory-based upscaling for well injectivity, fines migration, and CO2 and hydrogen storage. He is 2009-2010 and 2017-2018 SPE Distinguished Lecturer. Pavel was ranked among the world's top 2% scientists by Stanford University (2020).
