Abstract:

The remarkable but true story of how modern Coiled Tubing services emerged from an eclectic combination of technologies. Starting with Operation PLUTO ( Pipelines Under The Ocean) to rapidly unspool flowlines across the English channel during the invasion of Normandy (June 1944) to provide fuel for the beach head.  The antennae injector and stripper technology that allowed a cold war submarine to deploy and later retrieve tubulars on a spool from within the submarine without loss of pressure integrity of the vessel. Finally, the development of algorithms from test data to build a digital twin architecture to track, monitor, and model real time tubing stresses and fatigue during the execution of high pressure coiled tubing operations. The equipment has always been evolving and changing over time but it was the digital twin architecture that improved reliability and predictability that allowed for the technology to execute jobs in the Gulf of Mexico Deep-Water. This leap in digital insight brought about a technological revolution which still serves today as the cornerstone for coiled tubing applications as they continue to test and expand the next generation of challenges and tasks. The presentation takes you from infancy to maturity of one of the oilfield’s greatest innovations. A credit to the ingenuity of those early pioneers and a monument to benefits of building a service on safety and reliability.

Biography:

Dan Morrison graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1995. He joined Halliburton Energy Services in 1995 in the coiled tubing, hydraulic workover (HWO), and well control product service lines. It was during this tour of duty he served as one of the principal architects for the development of the Tubing Management program which created a digital twin to track tubing fatigue and reduce failures to a threshold high risk operations could be done safely. Later he would serve in various management and engineering roles within Halliburton.  Today, after 26 years, he works for Hexagon as an industry principal for oil and gas as he continues his passion to drive excellence, reliability, and most importantly safety through digital transformations.
