Abstract:
The objective of this presentation is to stimulate the discussion on how lab testing using novel methodologies can help test materials commonly exposed to harsh industrial environments. The first part of the talk will concentrate in field work done by the author while working in industrial environments in the Oil and Gas, Power, and Chemical industries. The second part of the talk will include Microscopy and Electrochemical studies on materials exposed to extreme environments (simulating them in the lab). The first case study will include the custom made ‘mini-autoclave’ which has been used to determine the factors that contribute to pitting corrosion initiation of Ni Alloy 718 (UNS N07718) at HT/HP in chloride containing environments. The presentation will include videos of simultaneous in-situ micro-visualization and either Electrochemical Noise (ECN) or Potentiodynamic Polarizations (PP) of microelectrodes while immersed in a chloride containing solution at HT/HP (to simulate extreme downhole conditions).
Biography:
Dr. Luis Garfias is a scientist and an engineer with 30+ years of experience on projects related to Failure Analysis, Corrosion, Materials Selection, Electrochemistry, and Microscopy. Luis also works on novel microscopy techniques at HT/HP in harsh environments. Luis has Chemical Engineering degree from the Autonomous University of Yucatan (Mexico 1986-1991), a M.Sc. in Corrosion Science and Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST UK 1992-1993), a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Oxford (UK 1993-1996) and was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Corrosion Research Center in the Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Department of the University of Minnesota (1996-1998). Luis has worked for Bell Labs, S.C. Johnson, DNV Columbus, Intertek, and Wood Group. Luis research interests include simultaneous visualization of corrosion in extreme environments and materials selection. Luis is a member of NACE and ECS and is currently a Scientific Referee for several Corrosion and Materials Science journals.
This will be an Evangeline Section hybrid meeting, any feedback will be welcome at the venue or SPEEvangelineSection@gmail.com.
