  • 1.  Basis for API RP 14B allowable leak rate for SCSSVs

Does anyone know the basis for the allowable leak rate in API RP 14B?  I have read this explanation in a nice LinkedIn article and am looking for corroboration:

"The API RB 14B criteria of 15 scf/min was established primarily on the fire hazard. A leak of 15 scf/min generates a jet fire of approximately 2 meters, which can be controlled by standard fire extinguisher equipment. The safety distance is approximately 10 feet, so as you can see this introduces restricted risk to personnel and equipment."

    (17) What are the risk factors that should be considered when you have a Sustained Casing Pressure (SCP) problem? | LinkedIn

    Thanks, Claire

Well integrity – Christmas tree acceptable leakage rate and sustained casing pressure (icheme.org)

This is the closest thing I've found on this subject.  The actual rate which allows the 3m ~ 10ft jet is about double the API14B limits.
