Ken , yes you are correct with respect to test requirements from API, in event of scale debris build up risk it is advisable to cycle the valve on regular basis to keep the flow tube clean and prevent it getting stuck, in some cases this is done on a monthly routine, i would be less worried about the flapper or seat as they are protected by the flow tube.

I've since been informed that API 14A Functional and Verification Tests are specified as being vertical in the standard. If they are tested horizontally this would be by customer special order and I suspect carried out after the API tests.
But as we all know we can test all we like and usually get perfect tests on new equipment. I'm more interested in the functionality of a horizontal valve after several years in the well exposed to sand and scale.
There are wells that need artificially lifted such as with an ESP pump and the well doesn't flow on its own. Quite the reverse in fact as the wells in some cases are sub hydrostatic, if the ESP pump is switched off, the fluids drain back to the reservoir through the effectively closed flapper.
So my question is in relation to older low pressure wells where you have no control; over the orientation of the flapper when the valve is deployed and the flow rate even when flowing may well be so low that there is sand and or other debris deposits on the low side of the hole. In this event the flapper only needs to be held slightly off its seat and it wont seal.
Granted the flow tube by design will usually be covering the seal face to prevent debris from getting to the seat.
