Introduction to Systems Thinking for the Energy SectorSystems thinking explores the relationships and dynamics within complex systems, aiming to design or refine them for optimal outcomes, and direct application to oil and gas.

After a highly-engaging master class with a small group of SPE professionals, SPE Gaia wanted to bring Marta's unique insight and background to the larger audience. Her perspectives provide valuable guidance on how, as individuals and leaders, we can reshape the dynamics of the oil and gas industry to drive more sustainable outcomes.

The speaker is Marta Ceroni, the Co-Director at the Academy for Systems Change, where she helps to coordinate research and to train professionals in the pioneering systems thinking of Donella Meadows' work.

UN Convention for Biological Diversity COP 16 and Opportunities to Contribute to the Global Biodiversity Framework

Join Us for the SPE Gaia Talk / Masterclass on Biodiversity COP16 with Ipieca 🌿
📅 When: 11 December 2024, 2pm (UK time) / 8 am (Central Time N America)
📍 Register here: https://lnkd.in/g6hn-__H
The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity was a milestone event, marking the first biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP15 in 2022. This pivotal framework sets the global action plan to reverse nature loss.
COP16, held from October 21 to November 1 in Colombia, centered on the implementation of the GBF and the progress of national biodiversity strategies and action plans.

Join us for a webinar featuring:
🔹 Artemis Kostareli, Nature Director at Ipieca
🔹 Kristie Lo, Ipieca Nature Manager
💡 Key Topics:
Highlights and outcomes from COP16
Implications for the oil and gas sector
How businesses can contribute to the GBF

Moderated by Neil Rimmer, SPE Sustainable Development Technical Section, the session will conclude with an engaging audience Q&A.

Don't miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of the GBF and the role of industry in achieving biodiversity goals. 🌱

Master Class

SPE Gaia Masterclass - Human Trafficking Awareness with David Reid

Often misunderstood or misread, the signs of human trafficking are around us and bear a threat we need to be aware of, to our children, the community and our companies.
This class will look at the global, national and regional issue of human trafficking. it will also share some inspiring stories of protection of our families in the industry by a grassroots organization that grew out of oil ang gas professionals - and will help people in the industry with information and awareness that can make a difference in your professional and personal journey.
You will gain 3 main attributes from attending.
1. a modern awareness of what human trafficking looks like in 2025.
2. An understanding of how grooming has evolved through increased access to children through the internet.
3. Some action steps to take if you see trafficking n your community.
This will have very limited traumatic detail and a lot of experience shared in how to learn and be active while managing a busy life and career. Join David Reid, CTO and CMO for NOV, and Founder and President of the 501c3 US-based Non-profit called redM.

Register today for October 9, 2024 Gaia Master Class with John Schopp

Climate science can often feel inaccessible to engineers, appearing either confined to PhD modelers or oversimplified for journalists and policymakers. John Schopp, a recently retired SPE member and former oil & gas executive, spent six months diving into the physics and data to make sense of it all. He discovered that the core science can be distilled into a few fundamental principles that any engineer can grasp. This 90-minute presentation will provide key rules of thumb to help you calculate the climate outcomes of various emissions scenarios, understand the cause-and-effect of different actions, assess the uncertainty of these predictions, and place them in the context of natural weather and climate variability. By investing 90 minutes, you can avoid six months of research!

The presentation will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session lead by Aimé Fournier, Research Scientist at MIT. John Schopp served as Vice President at Encana for 15 years and as an advisor to the private equity firm Blackstone Group for 5 years before retiring in 2021. In his free time, he enjoys energy investing and taking advantage of Colorado’s many outdoor sports with family and friends.

Advanced Membrane Technology Applications for Produced Water Treatment

Stringent regulations to protect the environment have generated an increased demand for oilfield produced water treatment for recycling and reuse, creating significant challenges to existing treatment technologies. Membranes technologies, even though they have sparsely been used in the oil and gas industry, offer promising solutions. During this SPE Live, we are going to discuss innovations on membrane materials, coatings and hydraulics. Field examples to illustrate applications of advanced membrane technology to treat produced water will be shared.
