Offshore Completions Technical Section (OCTS)

A global community for engineers and researchers advancing offshore completions: fit-for-purpose design, reliability, well access, and lower-impact operations.

What we do

Webinars · workshops · case histories · peer exchange · practical playbooks.

What we value

Field realism · repeatability · safety · integrity · sustainability-by-design.

About OCTS

OCTS supports technical professionals and academia engaged in offshore completions—sand control, stimulation, delivery systems, fluids, well access, and optimization—through online events, networking, workshops, and knowledge transfer across SPE channels. We bring together operators, service companies, researchers, and regulators to share lessons learned, discuss technology gaps, and highlight practical solutions that work under real offshore constraints.

Our focus spans the full lifecycle of offshore wells: from concept selection and completion design, through execution and start-up, to long-term surveillance, interventions, and late-life strategies. By connecting multi-disciplinary expertise across regions and water depths, OCTS helps members benchmark practices, de-risk designs, and improve the reliability and efficiency of offshore developments.

Our goal is to help the industry push new frontiers in offshore development with safer execution, better reliability, and a reduced environmental footprint, while keeping offshore completions aligned with long-term sustainability, safety, and affordability of energy access. Through OCTS, members can access curated technical content, participate in focused discussions and panels, and collaborate on initiatives that support lower-impact, sustainability-by-design approaches to offshore completions.

Technical Focus Areas

OCTS brings together offshore completion specialists to tackle the practical details that make or break a project: design envelopes, logistics, reliability, and long-term performance. These focus areas guide our webinars, workshops, and case-history discussions.

🛡️ Sand Control & Reliability

Design, qualification, installation, and long-term performance of sand control systems under offshore constraints. We focus on failure mechanisms, diagnostics, remediation strategies, and how to extend life-of-well reliability without over-engineering completions.

💥 Hydraulic Fracturing Offshore

Execution, equipment limits, and logistics for hydraulic fracturing from offshore rigs and vessels. Discussions include HP/HT constraints, fluid and proppant supply, operational risk management, and how to adapt land-based frac technologies to complex offshore environments.

🧰 Completion Delivery Systems

Crossover tools, conveyance, barriers, and deployment strategies that enable safe and efficient installation of complex offshore completions. We look at rig time optimization, contingency planning, remote operations, and lessons learned from equipment malfunctions and non-productive time.

💧 Fluids & Compatibility

Completion and workover fluids, damage control, and chemical compatibility with reservoirs, tubulars, elastomers, and sand control hardware. Emphasis is on realistic testing, clean-up efficiency, and practical recipes that balance performance, cost, and HSE requirements offshore.

🛠️ Well Access & Interventions

Rig and rigless access, diagnostics, and optimization of offshore well interventions. Topics include coiled tubing, wireline, slickline, and light-well intervention vessels, as well as work planning, integrity verification, and case studies where small intervention changes unlocked major value.

🌱 Sustainability-by-Design

Designing offshore completions with lower operational footprint from day one. We explore ways to reduce repeat interventions, lower emissions and energy use, minimize waste, and integrate monitoring and digital tools that support safer, more sustainable offshore developments over the full asset life.

Message from the Chair

“A repeat mistake in an offshore environment can be significant. Our community is focused on sharing knowledge, lessons, and innovations from a wide variety of experts—so we can deliver safer, cheaper, and more disruptive solutions that help industry push new frontiers in offshore exploration and development.”

— Karthik Mahadev, Chairperson · SPE OCTS
