Methane Emissions Management Technical Section (MEMTS)

Advancing detection, measurement, reporting, and cost-effective methane abatement through a global, cross-disciplinary community.

About MEMTS

Who We Are

Our mission is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the measurement, reporting, and cost-effective abatement of methane emissions from oil and gas operations and related technologies for the public benefit. We also provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence in this area.

We believe methane emissions reduction can be achieved by helping companies identify sources of emissions and providing cost-effective solutions to reduce or eliminate them while maximizing efficiency. MEMTS builds on work by the SPE Sustainable Development Technical Section and the Gaia Measuring What Matters work group, addressing the needs of those working in asset teams and/or in the field in Completions, Production & Operations, Projects Facilities & Construction, and the HSE & Sustainability communities to measure, report, and reduce methane emissions.

The Methane People: MEMTS is a global platform to share experiences, success stories, and cautionary tales – so we can learn from each other’s practices, mistakes, and learnings.
1
Measurement & Quantification Improving how we detect and quantify methane across facilities and assets.
2
Reporting & Disclosure Building inventories, methodologies, and transparency that stakeholders can trust.
3
Abatement & Operations Turning data into interventions, projects, and everyday operational improvements.
4
Sustainability & Public Benefit Linking methane management to climate goals, markets, and social license.
A shared language for methane emissions management — from detection and quantification to reporting and abatement.
Our Community

Young, Growing, and Diverse

MEMTS is one of SPE’s younger technical sections, with a membership that is international, cross-disciplinary, and multi-generational. Our community includes engineers, scientists, data specialists, policymakers, service providers, and students who care about credible methane emissions management.

  • MEMTS Board 2025–2026 – global leadership guiding our strategy and programs
  • Founding Chair and Past Chairs – continuity and mentoring for a young section
  • Young Professional Liaisons – ensuring early-career voices are heard

We work together to turn technical knowledge into practical action – in the field, in control rooms, and in boardrooms.

What We Do

Programs, Forums, and Conversations

MEMTS activities span in-person forums, conference sessions, JPT articles, and online programs – always with a focus on practical, technically robust methane management.

Methane Forum

Methane Emissions Management for a Sustainable Future
Banff, April 22–25, 2024

A dedicated forum bringing together operators, service companies, technology developers, and policymakers to explore methane emissions management pathways in practice.

Global Methane Conversation

Global Methane Emissions Management: Current Challenges and SPE’s Impact
JPT article – June 2, 2025

A feature examining emerging challenges, evolving expectations, and how the SPE community can shape credible methane solutions worldwide.

Webinars & Online Programs

A growing series of webinars featuring:

  • Detection, monitoring, and measurement technologies
  • Abatement strategies and project case studies
  • Reporting, policy, markets, and disclosure practices

Open to all MEMTS members, with recordings and materials shared through the community library where possible.

MEMTS at 2025 ATCE

MEMTS is part of a broader, integrated methane and energy-transition conversation, including:

  • Special Session SS01 (with PF&C, FMTS, H2TS, CCUSTS & RASTS):
Powering the Energy Transition and Decarbonization: The Role of Evolving Production and Facilities Skills and Technologies
  • Stronger Together Mixer – FMTS × MEMTS joint membership mixer at ATCE

Showcasing how measurement, methane, and the broader energy system are deeply connected.
