Introduction to Reservoir Fluids and How Good is that PVT Study?

We are pleased to kick off our fall speaker series by welcoming Toddy Guidry, Senior Technical Advisor at Core Laboratories and Core Labs' North American subject matter expert for Reservoir Fluids, to our September 2026 luncheon. This talk covers why representative reservoir fluid samples are critical to the design and operation of any development project, and how engineers can tell whether the PVT data they are working from is actually good. Biography Toddy Guidry is Sr. Technical Advisor for Core Labs and their North American SME for Reservoir Fluids, based in Lafayette, Louisiana. He also oversees technical sales, support, and corporate business development east of Texas. Toddy has an MS in Mathematics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and has been involved in the industry for over 40 years. Abstract The need for good, representative reservoir fluid samples is critical to the effective design and operation of any development project. The decision to build and deploy production facilities exposes producers to millions and even billions of dollars of investment risk, and a solid understanding of formation fluids right after discovery plays an essential part in mitigating that risk. Whether obtaining wireline formation test tool samples from 20,000 feet in deepwater environments or surface separator samples onshore, fluid analysis provides the ammunition needed for more efficient use of assets. But having PVT data is only part of the story. How good is your PVT study, and what are the effects and causes of bad data? Bad data feeds directly into your reservoir equations and ultimately into revenue projections. This presentation provides typical examples along with material balance techniques and QA/QC methods for PVT reports, so reservoir engineers can perform quality checks on their standard black oil PVT studies. It includes mass and mole balance calculations, as well as insight into how the data is generated and how to use it.
