Leveraging Offshore Oil & Gas Operational Experience for Offshore Hydrogen Production Menno Landsmeer, ENI BIO Menno Landsmeer, previously Lead Hydrogen Development Engineer at Eni / Neptune Energy, has a proven track record in hydrogen and oil & gas. Menno’s role will be to further develop H2DO’s Hydrogen Engineering expertise, taking it to the next level. ABSTRACT The transition to offshore hydrogen production presents a unique opportunity to repurpose and adapt decades of operational expertise from the offshore oil and gas sector. The talk explores how established practices in offshore engineering, asset integrity, logistics, and safety management can accelerate the deployment of offshore electrolysis systems and hydrogen transport infrastructure. The talk starts with what is required to produce hydrogen offshore and how that relates to Oil & Gas facilities. Key parallels include; modular topside design, subsea pipeline installation, remote operations, and harsh-environment maintenance protocols. The reuse of subsea networks and depleted gas fields for storage—combined with proven project execution models—offers significant cost and risk reductions for early-stage hydrogen pilots and commercial-scale rollouts. Furthermore, the oil and gas sector’s regulatory familiarity, workforce competencies, and supply chain maturity provide a robust foundation for scaling offshore hydrogen in alignment with EU decarbonization targets. By integrating legacy operational knowledge with emerging hydrogen technologies, the offshore energy sector can catalyze a resilient and economically viable hydrogen economy in the North Sea and beyond.
