Objective

As the Moderator, you are in control of the room. The main duties of the moderator are to ensure that judges follow their instructions, competition runs on time, and that audience members are respectful.

The role of the Moderator is open to both Professional and Student Members of SPE.

We are currently looking to fill three (3) moderator roles for the Rocky Mountain North America Competition, which will be held on Saturday 18 April 2020, at the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden Colorado. (Total number of moderators required may change)

Eligibility

SPC volunteers must be:

  • Approved by the SPE Staff responsible for the organisation of the contest
  • An SPE member in good standing (renewed membership for 2020)
  • Moderators must be physically present for the competition at the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday 18 April 2020.
  • Preferred previous experience in:
    • Public speaking
    • Chairing meetings
    • Volunteering with an SPE Section or Chapter
  • Personal interest in developing university students
  • Effective communicator

Expectations

Regional Competition Moderator Expectations:

  • Participate on the day of the contest to observe the presentations and ensure the competition runs on time.
    • The Regional Finals are being held at the at the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday 18 April 2020.
  • Provide a safety briefing to the competitors, judges, and audience before the start of the competition
  • Outline prizes and provides an overview of the schedule 
  • Ensure that presentations are loaded onto presentation computer before the start of each scheduling block
  • Introduce each new presenter
  • Notify competitors of their presentation time remaining
  • Ensure judges to do not significantly overrun their time in the question phase
  • Ensure that audience members are respectful

Time Commitment

Student Paper Contests typically run from 08:00 to 17:00 with lunch provided to all volunteers and contestants.

*Note: Volunteers will be expected to fund their own travel and accommodation to participate
