About the Subcommittee

The Ferguson Award Subcommittee holds the crucial responsibility of meticulously evaluating peer-approved technical papers authored by young professionals and subsequently providing their esteemed recommendations to the SPE Board of Directors. Comprised of a dynamic team of 7 to 13 SPE professional members in good standing, the subcommittee is composed of individuals possessing a rich reservoir of experience as authors or editors of technical papers. These dedicated professionals exhibit an exceptional depth of technical knowledge, unmatched expertise in their respective fields, and an unwavering passion for the award they are entrusted to adjudicate. It is noteworthy that many of the subcommittee members are distinguished Ferguson Award recipients themselves, attesting to their exceptional qualifications.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current SPE professional member with an unbiased vested interest in SPE (required)
  • Knowledge and experience of peer reviewed technical papers (required)
  • Technical expertise and interest in serving on an International Award
  • Subcommittee (required)
  • SPE member for at least five years (recommended)
  • Prior recipient of the Ferguson Medal or Certificate (recommended)

Expected Time Commitment

  • Three-year term for committee members
  • One-year term for the chair, typically an existing actively engaged award subcommittee member in the 3rd year of their term. 
  • Ability to meet for approximately three teleconferences.
  • Deliberations between March and May
  • Ability to review and critique around 50 to 80 technical papers between February and May

Deliverables and Expectations

  • Subcommittee members must act in the best interest of SPE and the participant.
  • No travel required. Communication will take place via teleconference and email.
  • Nomination reviews take place online and during deliberation teleconferences.
  • Deliverable - Award recipient recommendation(s) to the SPE Board of Directors for final approval
