North America Student Symposium is a multi-day event that provides professional development opportunities for SPE student members in North America through technical and soft skills presentations, field trips and networking events. When possible, a recruiting fair will also be included. 

North America Student Symposium is planned for students by students with support from SPE membership staff. The commitment is for one (1) year with all participants expected to attend the Symposium, which will be held in Los Angeles, California at the University of Southern California.

We are currently seeking members to join specific committees who will be responsible for the planning and execution of specific aspects of the North American Student Symposium. These committees will focus on; the program, social & networking events, sponsorship & fundraising, exhibition & career pathways, field trips, and regional Petrobowl qualifiers.

Qualifications:

  • Self-Starter with a proactive
  • Positive can-do attitude
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of persons
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to plan, control, and take responsibility for one's work
  • Demonstrated team player with strong organization, analytical, and time management skills

Key Requirements: 

  • SPE Member in good standing 
  • In good standing with University
  • Must graduate after April 2020
  • Currently enrolled in a University program maintaining a minimum of 30% course load  
  • Be attending a University within Canada, the United States, or Mexico

Committee Positions

Symposium Schedule Committee

Responsible for the development of the technical and non-technical program for the symposium. Reporting to the Event Director in charge of the NASS Schedule.

Committee Size = 5

  • Develops content ideas relevant to the audience
  • Solicits speakers
  • Solicits Keynotes, panels etc.
  • Communicates with speakers
  • Attend all NASS meetings

Social/Networking Events Committee

Works with professional members in the area to plan networking events. Works with fundraising committee on sponsorship for the event. Reporting to the Event Director in charge of the NASS Schedule.

This committee is reserved for SPE Student Members from the University of Southern California.

Committee Size = 2

  • Develops and plans social and networking activities that are appropriate for all attendees
  • Works within a specified budget
  • Works with selected venues for logistics and planning

Fundraising Committee

Will develop a fundraising plan and approaches organizations to seek out sponsorship opportunities. Reporting to the event director responsible for Fundraising and Sponsorship. Fundraising committee must be able to secure a minimum of USD 20,000.

Committee Size = 5

  • Works with SPE staff and Event Directors to develop a sponsorship package
  • Present sponsorship opportunities throughout the community approached companies for sponsorship
  • Communicates frequently with SPE staff and Event Director on sponsorship status
  • Facilitate contact and follow up with past and potential new sponsors
  • Attend all required NASS meetings
  • Work with SPE Staff to select and order recognition items for sponsors
  • Recognize and thank sponsors
  • Network with sponsors onsite to garner relationships

Exhibition/Career Fair/Career Pathways

This committee will be responsible for the planning and execution of a half day exhibition about the oil and gas industry with representatives from companies who are Sponsoring NASS, organizations seeking to hire New Grads, and individual SPE Professional Members who will educate attendees about their careers.

Definitions:

  • Exhibition – Sponsorship companies who wish to be present and speak to students about their companies. (Not hiring)
  • Career Fair – Organizations who are specifically looking to hire future recent graduates or those with internship opportunities available to students.
  • Career Pathways – SPE Professional Members who will provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about different career paths in an informal environment.

Committee Size = 5

  • Research and develop an understanding of positions new graduates are working in the industry
  • Reach out to SPE members in the Greater Los Angeles Area and invite them to participate in Career Pathways
  • Work with Event Director to plan and develop a floor plan
  • Coordinate on-site setup and check with vendors to make sure they have everything they need
  • Work in conjunction with the sponsorship committee to solicit corporate recruiters to participate (if possible)

Field Trip Committee

This committee will be responsible for arranging with organizations in the Greater Los Angeles Area site visits and field trips to their facilities. Reporting to the Event Director in charge of Field Trips

Committee Size = 3

  • Work with local companies to obtain field trips
  • Work with Event Director for logistical planning
  • With the organizations on a plan of action for field tip

Selection Process

The North American based Regional Activities Specialists will work with the established NASS Executive Committee to select candidates that best fit the committees that you have expressed interest in.

All those selected will be contacted on 27 March 2019.
