About the Major Award Subcommittees

The major award subcommittees are charged with reviewing nominated candidates and making award recipient recommendations to the SPE Board of Directors. The SPE major awards subcommittees are:

  • Carll, Lucas, and Uren Award Subcommittee which judges
    • John Franklin Carll Award
    • Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal
    • Lester C. Uren Award
  • DeGolyer, Rand, and McConnell Award Subcommittee which judges
    • DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal
    • Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal
    • Robert Earll McConnell Award
  • Distinguished Member Subcommittee which judges
    • Honorary Membership
    • Distinguished Membership
    • Members of this subcommittee must be either former SPE Presidents and/or Honorary Members, plus the current SPE President.

These subcommittees are composed of 7 to 13 SPE professional members in good standing who have expertise and interest in the awards they are judging and are often prior major award recipients. The incoming SPE President appoints major award subcommittee members.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current SPE professional member with an unbiased vested interest in SPE (required)
  • Technical expertise and Interest in serving on a major award subcommittee (required)
  • SPE member for at least 10 years (recommended)
  • Recipients of an SPE major award being judged (recommended)

Expected Time Commitment

  • 3-year term for members
  • One-year term for the chair, typically an existing actively engaged award subcommittee member in the 3rd year of their term
  • Ability to meet for teleconference deliberations between March and May

Deliverables and Expectations

  • Subcommittee members must act in the best interest of SPE and participate regularly.
  • No travel required. Communication will take place via teleconference and email.
  • All nomination review takes place online and during deliberation teleconferences.
  • Deliverable is recipient recommendation(s) to the SPE Board of Directors.
