About the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT) Editorial Review Board
Members of the JPT Editorial Review Board work with SPE staff to survey the more than 4,500 technical papers submitted to the Society each year to identify innovative, high-interest technical information for publication in JPT. Through shortened versions, or summaries, of papers, the journal covers a broad spectrum of technological advances by featuring the essential information from 12 papers in each issue.

The committee consists of a chairperson and 48 SME members; all serve 2-year terms. Members may be asked to serve additional terms if their area of expertise is needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be an SPE member
  • Must have excellent working knowledge of the specialty topic and preferably be a recognized industry expert on the topic
  • Must have several years of oil and gas industry experience
  • Must be able to compose an approximately 300-word introduction for the feature accurately describing the state of the technology
  • Preferably, have authored SPE technical papers
  • Preferably, have served on an SPE meeting technical session review committee

Expected Time Commitment

  • The Editorial Review Board holds one virtual meeting each year.
  • Each committee member is responsible for reviewing between 50 and 300 paper abstracts (these numbers can vary widely) and, subsequently, as many full-length papers as need be to select three papers that JPT staff will synopsize for inclusion in the magazine.
  • Members also prepare an approximately 300-word introduction for the feature accurately describing the current state of the technology or discipline. This selection and writing process requires several hours spread over an 8-week period, once per year. SPE staff sorts all conference papers into appropriate topics as they are processed into the SPE paper-management system; this determines the abstracts that are then sent to the reviewer when the time comes.

Deliverables and Expectations

Editorial Review Board members review selected abstracts or papers received by SPE and identify high-interest, broad-based, novel, practical papers applicable to current issues for consideration for publication in abbreviated form.
