SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Legends

Dear Colleagues,

Nominations are now open for the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Legend Recognition 2027. We invite the global SPE community to help identify a legend in hydraulic fracturing – a pioneer whose lifetime of technical achievements and contributions have fundamentally shaped our field

Who qualifies as a “Legend”?
A living professional (retired or semi-retired) whose work is so impactful that without their contributions, hydraulic fracturing would not be where it is today. This is a peer recognition, not a typical award – it’s reserved for those with a transformative, enduring influence in our industry.

Nomination package requirements:

  • At least one support letter detailing the nominee’s contributions and impact
  • Nominee’s CV or résumé
  • Optional: Additional evidence of the nominee’s long-term impact (e.g., key publications, patents, major projects)

Deadline: July 14, 2026 – Please email all nomination materials by this date to the Legend Selection Committee at amit.singh@chevron.com. Early submissions are encouraged.

We encourage nominations from all SPE regions to ensure global representation. This recognition relies on thoughtful, high-quality nominations. If you know an industry giant who meets these criteria, please consider preparing a nomination.

If you have any questions about eligibility or how to prepare the nomination package, please refer to the (link to the SPE HyFTS SharePoint with specific page with Legends Award, like letter / text for call for nomination, nomination form, and FAQ, and also potential list of prior Legends).

Thank you for helping us honor those whose legacy defines the field of hydraulic fracturing

Sincerely,

Amit Singh
Chair, Hydraulic Fracturing Legend Selection Committee

FAQ for Nomination (Key Points)

  • What is the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Legend Recognition?
It’s a prestigious peer recognition honoring a living individual for outstanding lifetime achievements and contributions in hydraulic fracturing. Think of it as a “lifetime legend” acknowledgement – not simply an award, but a recognition reserved for transformative, field-defining impact.
  • Who can be nominated?
retired or semi-retired (living) SPE member with major, long-term contributions in hydraulic fracturingSelf-nominations are not allowed. The nominee must not be on the current Legend Selection Committee. Nominees can be from any SPE region (not restricted to North America), as long as they meet criteria. They must not have already received another SPE “Legend of…” recognition.
  • What makes a strong nomination?
Quality of content is crucial. A strong nomination clearly demonstrates that the nominee’s work was a game-changer in the field. It should include specific examples (projects, technologies, publications) showing the nominee’s technical breakthroughs and their lasting influence. Include evidence of industry-wide adoption or impact (e.g., methods named after them, standards influenced, etc.). The nomination should ideally show global relevance, not just local or one-company influence.
  • What is required in the nomination package?
completed nomination form (with all fields filled) Legends Award Nomination Form 2027, at least one recommendation letter from a peer, the nominee’s CV or résumé, and any supporting documents that help illustrate the nominee’s legendary contributions (e.g., award citations, major publications, invention patents, etc.).
  • When is the nomination deadline?
All materials must be submitted by July 14, 2026. Early submissions are welcome. Once submitted, the Selection Committee will verify eligibility (e.g., SPE membership status, retirement status) and then proceed with evaluation.
  • Where do I submit the nomination?
Email the complete package to amit.singh@chevron.com (Chair of the Legend Selection Committee). You should receive a confirmation of receipt within a few days.
  • How is the selection made?
The Legend Selection Committee (comprising HyFTS and HFTC past/current leaders) will evaluate nominees using a rigorous matrix of criteria (technical impact, publications, mentoring, etc.). They will forward one recommended candidate to a higher Endorsement Group (SPE Technical Director and Chairs) for final approval. Only one Legend is recognized in a given cycle, and only if a candidate of truly exceptional caliber is identified.
  • When will the recognition be awarded?
The plan is to honor the selected Legend at the SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technical Conference (HFTC) 2027 (and possibly also at the International HFTC, if applicable), with an official ceremony and recognition.
