​In the Lower Rhine Embayment between the cities of Cologne and Aachen the famous "Rheinische Braunkohlerevier" ("Rhenish lignite mining area") is located. Participants of this excursion will be guided through one of Germany’s biggest open pit lignite mines and will learn about the regional geology, the background of modern coal-fired power generation and will witness the largest excavators in the world during operation.

This event is open for all participants of the STC 2019 in Aachen - seats are limited (duration ca. 5 hours, including transportation from Aachen to the field and back; PSE will be provided. Please note: the mining area will be dirty and windy - therefore, ankle-high footwear and weather-proof clothes are required … safe your suit and polished shoes for later).

For retirees the same price is applicable as for students.
