  • Correlating Flow Regimes and Fluid Properties with Corrosion in Pipelines Luncheon

    Venue: Norris Conference Center, (816 Town and Country Boulevard, #210) Date: Thursday January 22, 2015 Time: 11.00am to 12.00noon – Networking and Lunch 12.00 – 1.00pm – Presentation and Q&A Speaker: Dr. Probjot Singh Flow Assurance Supervisor Global Production Excellence ConocoPhillips Topic: Correlating Flow Regimes and Fluid Properties with Corrosion in Pipelines ABSTRACT For a given production system, the corrosion mitigation philosophy is usually established based on the fluid properties and the operating parameters pre-identified within the Basis of Design (BOD). Information in the BOD comes from reservoir simulation, process/flow modeling, and thermodynamic/ compositional fluid analyses. These data have limited accuracy and a wide variability throughout the field life. Very often and due to capital expenditure (CapEx) constraints, most of production facilities primarily utilize carbon steel lines with corrosion mitigation provided by injection of chemical inhibitors. When using carbon steel pipelines and inhibition, a successful operation requires active corrosion monitoring to keep tabs on effectiveness of the chemical inhibition program. The monitoring program is a key to proactively identify corrosion mechanisms surfacing during the field operation. Depending on the mechanisms identified, corrective actions are usually developed. These actions may include additional chemical treatments and mechanical systems such as pigging to bring the corrosion under control. This talk will discuss some of the interesting corrosion mechanisms that have emerged in production systems due to changes in flow regimes and thermal behavior as operating conditions changed during field operations. We will see how corrosion monitoring data with fluid analyses, flow modeling, and additional laboratory testing have been effectively used to understand the corrosion mechanism and develop solutions for control. Bio Probjot Singh currently holds a Flow Assurance supervisor position within ConocoPhillips’ Global Production organization. Before joining this role in mid-2014, he served as a Technical Authority in corrosion and production chemicals within 'Asset and Operating Integrity' team of ConocoPhillips Alaska (CPAI). Prior to joining CPAI in 2011, Probjot has led Fluids Technology team within ConocoPhillips' Production Assurance Technology group in Bartlesville. Probjot holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Probjot has published a number of technical papers in SPE, AIChE and NACE during the past 18+ years in the areas of flow assurance, fluid chemistry and chemical treatment in the oil and gas industry. Probjot has also served in the SPE Distinguished Lecturer program in 2010-11 session and shared his experience 'on managing paraffins for flow assurance' to the worldwide SPE community.
