This entertaining presentation is a tour through the times when the downsizing of the O&G industry took place, the 1990’s. The consolidation of the industry had a negative effect on the motivation of people to stay in the business. Many thoughts were pursued and business models were set up that went contrary to common sense. The presentation sheds light on the fact that the motivation of the engineer is a key driver in getting more oil out of the ground.

Klaus Potsch

Klaus Potsch, now retired, was Senior Expert in the Laboratory for Exploration and Production (LEP) of OMV. Prior to that position, he led the Group of High Pressure Technology in the LEP and earlier the team of the Reservoir Engineering Group. Before this assignment, he managed the Mathematics LEP group of OMV. His contributions in the field of reservoir engineering are in the areas of PVT, phase behavior, enhanced oil recovery, and multiphase flow.

An SPE member since 1986, Klaus has served as Vienna Section Chairperson, Program Chairperson, and Secretary. He also is the Austrian representative for the Intl. Energy Agency Task Force for Enhanced Oil Recovery for several years, and participated in a research consortium at the Danish Technical University. Klaus earned an MS degree in physics and a PhD degree in fluid mechanics from the Technical University of Vienna.
