Abstract:
Hydraulic fracturing is essential for the development of U.S. shale-gas and tight-oil plays, but sometimes casing failures prevent the well from being completed as planned. In addition, because unconventional wells can deplete rather quickly and can be very expensive to drill and complete, it sometimes makes sense to refrac these wells. Downhole expandable solid-steel liners have been used for over ten years in the U.S. to restore casing for fracturing and to isolate depleted intervals for refracturing. The liner is expanded hydraulically downhole using a solid steel cone. The expansion process increases the strength of the steel by cold working. During expansion, elastomeric seals bonded to the outside of the liner are compressed against the casing providing pressure integrity and anchoring.
The subject presentation will describe applications of solid-steel expandable liner technology to challenging unconventional-reservoir well restorations and completions in the Bakken, Eagle Ford, Wolfcamp, Williams Fork, and Marcellus plays, and for covering entire horizontal intervals for refracturing in the Barnett as well as for primary fracturing in the Marcellus plays. The installation and performance of expandable liners will also be discussed.

Prior to joining Enventure, Brian held positions with TESCO as Sales Engineer for CASING DRILLING™, as well as Drilling Engineer for BP and ConocoPhillips based in Houston. Brian holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas.
