What the frack is going on ?
The exploration of unconventional resources plays in Europe is one of the most controversial issues these days.
The public & political opinion and perception ranges from potential future gas import independency, like in the US, to complete environmental disasters caused by hydraulic stimulation.
This talk gives in the first part a critical view on the “unconventional situation” in Europe from a general perspective and highlights its potential contribution for the future energy mix.
In the second part, it is discussed which conclusions can be drawn for the downhole processes during hydraulic stimulation from analysis and evaluation of measured surface data.
Christoph Marschall
Subsequent to earning his master of petroleum engineering at the mining university of Leoben, Mr. Marschall started his career with RAG in 2002. After 5 years of working in the area of surface oil- & gas-production and gas storage, mainly responsible for Project Management, Project Controlling, Planning & Budgeting and mining authority processing, he rotated to the subsurface engineering department as Production Engineer.
Later on he acted as Supervisor and Manager of this department, as well as the Workover and Logging crew. In March 2012 Mr. Marschall changed to the new international exploration & production division within RAG as Production Engineering Advisor, especially focused on unconventional reservoirs.
Hans-Jürgen Handler
After earning a degree in petroleum engineering from the Mining University Leoben, Mr. Handler joined RAG (Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG) in 1998, where he worked as Drilling Engineer, Head of Drilling Planning & Operations, in the Planning Department and as Head of Corporate Planning & Statistics. Since December 2009 Mr. Handler is also member of the board of directors to Saponis, an independent Polish company, focused on shale gas development in the Baltic Basin.
In 2012 Mr. Handler was assigned to his current position at RAG as Head of Business Development Unconventionals and Area Manager Poland & North-East Europe. In this function he is responsible for the management of the JO Mohave-Sorgenia-RAG for the development of shale-oil potential in the Lias strata of the Lusitanian Basin in Portugal, the JO Sorgenia-RAG for the development of shale-gas potential of the Cantabrian Basin in Spain and the management of RAG's interest at Saponis.
