New Deepwater Technologies from JPT Young Technology Showcase

The SPE JPT defines Young Technology as new technology that has been recently deployed and has significant impact on the industry. 

This webinar event is mini-panel of young technologies deployed in deepwater which have been featured in JPT under the Young Technology Showcase series.  It will feature a short keynote addressing the importance of new technology for present and future deepwater developments, followed by two presentations on Young Technologies.  Each presentation is allotted 15 minutes followed by a 5-10 minute Q&A period.  After all of the presentations, the floor will be open for questions and discussion.

The two presentations include:

1. A new Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technique called EC-Drill for use on floating drilling vessels.  This technology falls under the broader category of Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD).  EC-Drill actively adjusts the level of the drilling fluid in the riser to shift the wellbore pressure profile allowing for compensation of Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) effects.  This enables drilling operations to be performed while maintaining constant static and dynamic bottomhole pressures.

Also presented are results from the application of EC-Drill during well operations offshore Cuba in 7500 ft water depth.  In this case study, the technology enabled drilling through a previously un-drillable formation permitting the well to safely reach total depth.  The formation in question was depleted resulting in hole stability problems when drilled conventionally.  The capability of keeping the BHP constant during all operations in the narrow pore/fracture pressure window allowed the interval to be successfully drilled.

2. Today’s oilfields are continuously increasing in complexity, risk and cost. Because of these constraints, the gathering of reservoir surveillance data with permanently installed sensors or production logging tools (PLT) may often be cost-prohibitive or technically unfeasible. As a consequence, operators are faced with a significant amount of uncertainty in reservoir management and are forced to make assumptions about reservoir performance that may not reflect actual conditions. 

RESMAN Intelligent tracers offer a unique solution to gain insight about well production and reservoir inflow performance without the need of costly or risky changes to the completion design and without additional rig time.
