A look at Recent Chinese Shale Gas Developments

In recent
years, the shale gas revolution in the US has significantly enhanced the
country’s energy security, improved its economy, changed its environmental
outlook and profoundly impacted global geopolitical balance of power.
China’s technically recoverable shale gas resources are estimated to be in
the similar volumes of the US’s. As China’s dependences on imported oil and gas
soared, and environmental pollutions rampaged, China is looking at the US for
its inspirations in improving its domestic oil and gas development and supplies,
and reversing its worsening environmental trends.
There are certainly not
short of news and comments from media about China’s shale gas efforts. Many of
the discussions were useful, but for all kind of reasons, some of them were not
really helping, and often, added confusions to the issues.
In this talk, Dr.
Qi is to look at the shale gas progress in China from a subsurface exploration
stand point, and uses data to support or substantiate his evaluation and view,
and tries to draw some preliminary learnings for the current status and possible
trends in the Chinese gas development.
Yuanchang Qi is currently a deputy project manager in the BP
China Exploration group. He got his first degree in petroleum engineering at the
China Petroleum University, and Ph.D. in reservoir engineering at the Norwegian
Institute of Technology in Norway, He joint Amoco Norway as a reservoir engineer
in the early 90s, working on a North Sea oil field, and in the late 90’s moved
to the then Amoco’s Upstream Technology Group in Houston, doing R&D and
technical services for company’s global assets.
Qi stayed on in the Houston technology group
after BP merged with Amoco, and then moved to Shekou, China in 2005 as BP’s
subsurface advisor to the CNOOC Yacheng joint operating company. He moved to
Beijing to join the BP China’s Exploration Team in 2008, and works for BP’s
unconventional projects in onshore China
since.
