Shale Gas in the UK: Normalising the Unconventional

Serious shale gas prospecting in the UK entered its 4th year in 2014, yet it remains at an early stage in its development. Why is this? This presentation seeks to examine what the industry must do to move to a better footing in terms of its future growth.

The viability of shale gas as an economically viable resource remains to be proven but there are also other issues impeding the normalisation of the sector. A key lesson is that every shale gas play has unique attributes, requiring operators to adopt a finely tuned strategy, incorporating solutions to both engineering and non-technical risks. There is an obligation on operators to engage and raise understanding in an unbiased way; this has been very limited so far. We look in the rear-view mirror at the changing stakeholder attitudes to shale gas and the way in which developers have handled issues of public concern and we look ahead, considering what  a ”normalised” sector needs to do, how it needs to behave and the challenges this poses.

William Hazell is a Principal Consultant in ERM’s Impact Assessment & Planning team with over 12 years’ professional experience focused on providing Environmental Impact Assessment, sustainability and stakeholder requirements to deliver projects of national significance. Will’s cross sector experience includes ‘controversial’ projects and those of major economic value to local and regional economies (such as High Speed 2,  Ebbw Vale Regeneration and The Hinkley C Connection) which have drawn on his ability to balance environmental, social and economic parameters within the project development process. He is skilled in developing innovative approaches to engagement with and responses to stakeholder expectations. He is a member of Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and is currently based in Bristol but is in the process of relocating to Aberdeen.

AFTER DINNER: 7.30 pm-9.00 pm:

Emerging trends in upstream JVs, PSAs and PSCs

Dr Marc van Grondelle, Head of KPMG’s Global Joint Ventures Practice, illustrates, based on recent international experience working with international oil & gas companies, that, whatever their bad press:

  • Good JVs (including PSAs and PSCs) do exist - they're just the ones you never hear about
  • Though all JVs are different, the bad ones often have things in common
  • Many ugly situations can be foreseen - and therefore avoided
  • Even where the prognosis looks bleak, recovery can be achieved

Marc joined KPMG in 2011, following nearly 20 years’ hands on experience setting up and operating joint ventures in the oil & gas industry around the world. He has an MSc in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering as well as a PhD in Islam and Islamic Affairs. His industry joint venture career has spanned the globe from Gabon to Australia, the FSU region and India working on ventures ranging in scale from $600 million to over $40 billion in asset value. Since his arrival at KPMG he has won and led projects spanning the JV lifecycle from creation and set-up to turnaround and exit, and from the Middle East to China

KPMG’s Global Joint Ventures Practice:

  • Leading expert advisers in all forms of contractual collaboration, alliance and joint venture
  • Our core UK-based team works in close collaboration with local KPMG technical teams around the world
