Abstract:

A full anisotropic wellbore stability model and demonstrate its applications in drilling in challenging environment. Wells drilled through laminated rocks like shales, particularly highly deviated wells, are often less stable than similar wells drilled through non-laminated rocks. This can result in significant wellbore instability-related drilling problems that can increase drilling operation costs substantially.

In anisotropic rocks like highly laminated shales and fractured rocks, traditional approaches are no longer valid as borehole failure can occur along weak planes and fractures.

An anisotropic wellbore stability model in which the rock anisotropic elastic properties and anisotropic strength characteristic are incorporated has been developed to address wellbore instability mechanism in any laminated formations. Wellbore shear failure mechanism is modelled by a Modified Plane-of-Weakness Model to identify the onset of rock sliding along a weak plane and fracture. The active shearing effect is adopted to delineate whether the onset of sliding along weak planes or fractures at wellbore wall will develop and cause wellbore instability. The influences of laminated plane and fracture orientations as well as drilling experience are incorporated into the model. The model can predict the extent of failure region around the wellbore and subsequently provide mud weight window for safe and efficient drilling.
