SPE Gulf Coast Section - Continuing Education CommitteePetroleum Data Analytics (PDA) - Engineering Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Petroleum IndustryIn the past few years, lack of success or mediocre outcomes of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our industry is quite common. To a large degree, this has to do with a superficial understanding of AI by petroleum engineering service companies and vendors and their concentration on marketing schemes rather than on science and technology. In the petroleum industry, AI is part of Petroleum Data Analytics (PDA). PDA addresses two major issues that determine the success or failure of AI in our industry: (a) the differences between "engineering" and "non-engineering" problem solving and decision-making, and (b) how AI is differentiated from traditional engineering problem-solving and traditional statistical analysis. It is highly important for future and current generations of scientists and petroleum professionals to develop a proper and realistic understanding of AI.Plan to attend Dr. @Shahab D. Mohaghegh training, next Wednesday (Oct. 5), to learn how to successfully implement AI in petroleum engineering. Dr. Mohagheh is a Professor @West Virginia University who is a pioneer in the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the Exploration and Production industry.
