Engineering Ethics

By Tariq Ahmad posted 02-04-2016 09:59 PM

One of the most important lessons for Engineers in our industry is to be ethical in our analysis.  To have analysis that is free from bias but rather based upon science and engineering.

Over the past few years reserves were a major issue, management wants higher reserve numbers to satisfy equity holders.

Failures occur with equipment, bad cement, casing programs.  An after the failure study must be based upon unbiased review, rather than on preconceived ideas.

Engineers have a huge responsibility in safety, environmental impact, financial analysis, people management, etc. Ethics should be a uncompromising factor in everything we do. Unfortunately, this never appears in people's objectives. Management far too often puts on their yearly bonus a higher value than on ethics, as if a line on ethics in company's core values was a sufficient claim. It is a shame that hurts the entire industry and profession. I wish you were followed on that point!
