Dr. Uche said that a student member can get paired up with an engineer working in the field to get to know what his/her day-to-day activities are like through e-mentoring.  She added that SPE has internship programs that can help students form those networks that they might need.“Through competitions such as PetroBowl, student members get a chance to connect with students from other Universities departments.”

Other ways in which the organization supports students include scholarships, book/journal discounts, and conference grants. She went on to outline the tasks that 21st-century petroleum engineers should begin to think about. These tasks include lessening the environmental impact of oil and gas exploration; managing the life cycle development on oil and gas fields; developing an alternative drilling and production technology, and optimizing those delivery networks for natural gas.

Dr. Bolade Agboola, another professor in the Petroleum Chemistry and Engineering program, delivered a presentation on natural gas flaring and its environmental and economic effects. He said that in recent years Nigeria has made progress in checking gas flaring.

President of the AUN Chapter of SPE, Mr. Eric Hagenimana, said his chapter is currently one of the most active and important student organizations on the AUN campus, adding that it won the Stallion Award for the Best New Student Organization of last year.

The SPE Week had an exhibition of activities that the chapter has been involved in, oil and gas exploration, production Videogames, and a raffle draw for fun

LAST DAY OF SPE Week : AMBASSADOR LECTURE By Mr.Aristotle John-Emezi accompanied by the Section Chairman.

On the last day of the SPE Week, we had two presenters : Mr. Aristotle John-Emezi, Student Affairs/ Young Professionals Officer, SPE-Abuja and Mr. Salahuddeen Tahir, Chairman of, SPE-Abuja Section.

The duo talked about the Society of Petroleum Engineers as an organization that encourages students to be members. John-Emezi said, “SPE has chapters at Universities to help student members with making their first steps towards their future careers in the industry.”

He also told students why they can join their University chapter as members. He said the platform offer students so many opportunities such as participating in events that the chapter organizes, volunteering  to gain valuable experience, as well as receiving recognition for outstanding activities and contributions. “It provides direct link to the industry, expand your horizons and improve your leadership skills.”

As for joining the organization, he told the audience consisting mainly of students that their membership is free, being paid by Chevron.

Their presentation ended the SPE Week that has its theme as Petroleum Industry and Environment.

The Chair of the Petroleum Program, Dr Linus Okoro, has also said there is need for the future Petroleum Chemists and Engineers to look into the problem of oil spillage in Nigeria so as to guarantee a safe environment.

The Chairman of Petroleum Chemistry and Engineering also spoke on October 29, 2015 , the last day of SPE Week organized by the Society for Petroleum Engineers – AUN Chapter, on the topic, Causes, effects and remedy for Oil spill pollution in Nigeria.

He said the inhabitants of the major oil producing areas in the Nigeria Delta are impoverished. “Most of these things happen in the villages. Their sources of livelihood have been destroyed. They can’t earn a living anymore. They plant but cannot have bountiful harvest. Their farmlands have been destroyed.  Something needs to be done to help these people affected by oil spillage because their environment is highly polluted.”

He therefore called on the young future professionals to have them at their heart and be thinking of what to do.

The other speaker for the day was Mr. Olurotimi Ogundijo from the Office of Sustainability Initiatives, who spoke on the need to protect our environment. Ogundijo said, “There is no excuse for environmental negligence…life expectancy has been cut down to 50 percent. It is bad to cut down a tree, but there is a rule of planting another one which most people do not usually observe.”
