Novel Sonic-Derived Saturation Model to Estimate Water Saturation – Improvement over Archie’s Method

In shaly sands and low-resistivity, low-contrast reservoirs (LRLC), Archie’s saturation model often breaks down, leading to inaccurate water saturation estimates. We introduce a new semi-empirical saturation model that estimates water saturation using compressional and shear sonic log measurements. Archie’s saturation model has been the most widely used empirical approach for estimating water saturation in oil and gas reservoirs. It relies on measurements of formation resistivity, brine salinity, and the reservoir’s electrical properties to provide accurate estimates. The model assumes that the electrical conductivity of reservoir rock is primarily due to the conductive fluids occupying the pore spaces. Alternative models have been developed to address cases involving low-salinity brines or high clay content also have limitations and may not consistently outperform Archie’s equation. Our new approach is grounded in the principle that hydrocarbon-bearing formations typically exhibit lower bulk moduli than water-saturated rocks. The model aligns with theoretical rock physics frameworks and uses velocity data and established empirical relationships between P-wave and S-wave velocities. This model is designed to complement traditional resistivity-based models in the evaluation of both conventional and unconventional reservoirs, where those models are valid. However, in LRLC reservoirs, it yields more reliable water saturation estimates than resistivity-based saturation models.

His impactful work in machine learning and electromagnetic sensing significantly contributes to advancements in energy and earth resource exploration. Moderator Bio: Dr. Amit Kumar joined ExxonMobil in 2013 and is currently a Data Science Technical Project Manager in the Unconventional business line. Novel Slickwater Stimulation for Shales and Tight Reservoirs – Don’t Pump More Sand!

A Masterclass from John Ely, who received the ‘Legend of Hydraulic Fracturing’ award in 2021! John builds a case for a different technique to enable economic completion of tight reservoirs. This overcomes the tendency to "pump more sand" and the long-held concerns of destroying near-well permeability. Learnings from the Bossier Shale production enhancement, a unique Slickwater technique to stimulate verticals in ultra-tight reservoirs, help us optimize present-day horizontal designs. This leads to large volumes with much less proppant, and very selective perforating. Multiple well production data from 7 different reservoirs, and a comparison of production and economics with the "Waterfrac Sweep" process and offset horizontal production is presented. We go in-depth with a particular play in New Mexico.

Digital Twins for Wellbore Tool Design: A Neural Surrogate-Based Approach

Digital Twins developed from simulation-driven neural surrogates offer a new paradigm for the Wellbore Tools design. Traditional iterative optimization methods can be both time-intensive and costly. The webinar summarizes the key steps to develop the Digital Twin. We demonstrate effectiveness with the examples of compression-set packers for wellbore cementing applications and quad seals typically used in multi-closing sleeves for sand control and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing. Wellbore tools are complex mechanical systems required to reliably work in challenging downhole environments. The application environment can cause large plastic deformation of deployable metallic components and hyperelastic deformation of elastomeric seals. Such nonlinear interactions between their components and interdependent responses make traditional design optimization challenging. In the simulation-driven neural surrogates method, physics-based simulations are used to generate training data for neural networks. This produces a tool design surrogate. These Digital Twins correlate system responses to design parameters and are used to accelerate performance predictions and identify optimal designs. Critical analysis steps include identifying the governing design parameters using engineering mechanics, leveraging domain knowledge, efficiently populating the design matrix, defining an appropriate multi-objective performance function, validating the surrogate model, and identifying the optimal solution. AI and additive manufacturing (AM) are a powerful combination with the potential to accelerate the adoption of AM across industries. AM excels at producing complex geometries with minimal waste, agile supply chains, and shorter lead times. However, its broader adoption is constrained by high costs and persistent challenges in quality assurance. AM processes are highly sensitive to variables such as environmental conditions, material properties, machine variability, and design complexity. At the same time, AM is inherently data-rich—making it ideal for AI-driven insights. For example, AI can monitor the build process in real time, detect anomalies, and assess their impact on part quality as each layer is formed. Reactive approaches to these issues often result in higher operational expenditures (OPEX) and hinder the broader adoption of geothermal systems. The industry is increasingly leveraging advancements in data acquisition and data science to enhance operational efficiency. By integrating monitoring data with unstructured information, decision support tools can be developed to proactively address challenges and optimize performance. Drawing lessons from the petroleum sector, this lecture provides examples on geothermal operational challenges with a special focus on electrical submersible pumps and integrating digital tools and models to improve the production and operation. This presentation bridges geothermal energy operation, data science, and production technologies to offer insights relevant to both geothermal and petroleum sectors. The content can be tailored to address key interests in operational optimization, data analytics, or artificial lift systems. Biografija: Pejman is a top senior scientist, leads TNO's Production Optimization and AI teams in the energy transition unit. With almost 15 years of experience, he pioneers digital technologies in geo-energy systems, flow assurance, and data-driven decision support for real-time production enhancement across sectors like oil and gas and geothermal energy. Notably, Pejman leads national, European and international projects, collaborating with several energy companies. Pursuing a Ph.D. at Wageningen University, Pejman holds a Master's degree from Delft University of Technology, with over 20 publications and prestigious awards. His awards include winning the AInnovation competition in 2023, candidate for best researcher in 2015 and 2017. Natural Hydrogen: A Geological Novelty or a Game Changer for the Energy Transition?

Hydrogen is currently in vogue as the ultimate low carbon, sustainable energy solution. World consumption is predicted to grow eight-fold from around 70 million tonnes annually today to more than 550 million tonnes by 2050. Over 90% of current hydrogen supply comes from fossil fuels but given the ambitious global net zero targets where will all this future hydrogen supply come from? Finding a new way to produce hydrogen which does not require significant energy input nor emit CO2 yet is commercially viable is therefore extremely important for the World. Natural/geologic hydrogen which is generated within the Earth by on-going geological processes is being suggested as one such source. Until recently even the concept of naturally occurring hydrogen on the Earth was deemed impossible given its reactive nature, low atomic weight and its extremely small molecular size. Consequently, the exploration for natural hydrogen is still very much in its infancy. What we do know is that natural hydrogen certainly exists at the Earth’s surface as seepages or as low pressure/low volume accumulations. However, can it be found trapped as a free gas at depth with pressures sufficient for commercial flow rates using existing drilling technologies? This talk will discuss current examples of natural hydrogen exploration but will focus on a project where reservoir burial depths are greater than 3 kilometres and subsurface temperatures approaching 100°C. It will illustrate using the 1963 Monzón-1 well in northern Spain what a by-passed natural hydrogen discovery looks like and how by using existing oil/gas technologies the discovery could form the basis for Europe’s first commercial natural hydrogen development. The one take away from this lecture should be that natural/geologic hydrogen exists, it can be explored for and hopefully produced commercially by leveraging existing oil/gas people and technologies. Distinguished Lecturer: Christopher Atkinson Chris has over 40 years’ experience in the energy/resource sector initially working for Shell and then Atlantic Richfield in their reservoir research divisions and ultimately as the Exploration Vice President of ARCO Europe/Eurasia before the merger with BP plc. In 2001 Chris left big oil and co-founded the predecessor of Serica Energy plc which today is one of the top ten oil and gas producers in the UK North Sea. In 2018 he co-founded Helios Aragon which is exploring for natural/geologic hydrogen and helium gas in Spain, UK, Poland, Australia and Oman. Chris also currently acts as a non-executive director of Lime Petroleum in Norway and is the Chairman and board member for Masirah Oil in Oman. Chris is a member of the SPE Singapore section, a past president and life member of SEAPEX (Southeast Asian Petroleum Exploration Society) and spent several years as an active council member of the IPA (Indonesian Petroleum Association). It affects borehole quality, stick-slip tendencies, and bottomhole pressure stability. Regional Event: Carbon Capture Wells – The same, but different

About the Presentation: This lecture will introduce carbon capture wells and highlight some of the unique challenges faced with constructing these wells. The similarities with conventional oil, gas and water wells will be explored and the differences will be explained. The lecture will touch on well integrity, injectivity challenges, chemical processes and some innovative modelling and testing approaches that can help in the design of CO2 injection wells. The differences between different CO2 store types will be explained and the different challenges faced in saline aquifer and depleted hydrocarbon stores explored. The lecture will explain how conventional oil and gas well design can transition to CO2 injection well design and the key role well engineers, production technologists, production chemists and near wellbore flow specialists need to play as part of a multidisciplinary approach to achieving CO2 injection well objectives. A key take away from the lecture will be that many of the existing oil and gas well design and construction skills are required for CO2 injection wells, but there are additional challenges to consider, challenges that we as an industry are well equipped to overcome. About the Distinguished Lecturer: Michael is an experienced industry professional and leader with over 35 years’ experience. A graduate of University College Dublin, Michael served on the API committee which developed procedures for return permeability testing. He has authored many technical publications on formation damage and numerical well modelling having developed procedures for modelling flow in wells and reservoirs using computational fluid dynamics. Michael served as an SPE distinguished lecturer in 2009-2010 and again in 2014-2015 and has presented technical papers and training courses globally. More recently Michael has worked in CO2 storage and has contributed to well design in several CO2 stores. Drilling operation process automation examples can illustrate the concepts at play. The presentation’s main idea is how technology and processes must be deployed at scale to realize benefits in the well lifecycle for everyone. The value of well construction comes from hydrocarbons produced over a well’s lifecycle in a safe and economical manner. By definition, the design and delivery of a well have built-in production impacts. Other production impacts can come from well execution processes determining well properties. Examples are wellbore placement and hole quality, which can limit well functionality and constrain the range of subsequent wellbore operations. New systems seek to integrate groups of well delivery processes. One example is automating the process of drilling a 90’ stand of drill pipe which can then be repeated as new stands are added to deliver a well. This work aimed to improve operational efficiency by reducing process variation. However, since the wellbore quality delivered with each stand impacts well value, automation is a viable tool to manage lifecycle wellbore quality requirements. Adopting an interconnected well construction system approach is slow since so much change is required by every stakeholder, including organization, processes, and technology. Parties want to see the economic benefits before moving from departmental delivery goals toward managing the well construction value stream. This collaborative process can be applied to multiple areas where many independent stakeholders work together. Biography Matt Isbell is a recently retired Senior Drilling Engineering Advisor, formerly with Hess Corporation. He is a drilling system subject matter expert with worldwide experience. His current focus connects well construction roles with tools and processes to leverage digital drilling data and engineering to improve outcomes. He received a BSME in 1988 from The University of Texas at Austin. He serves on the SPE Forum Implementation Committee and chairs the IADC Drilling Engineering Committee and SPE Drilling and Wells Interoperability Group Advisory Board.

Identifying Construction Hazards with AI Vision – Lessons Learned

A two-phased pilot was conducted by Occidental to test the viability of AI vision at an oil processing facility construction site in the Permian Basin. A commercial platform was selected because of its robust suite of machine learning algorithms designed to identify safety hazards from a video stream. Additional features included analytics on the severity, type, and location of the hazards. Cameras were positioned at the edge of the location, facing areas of dense activity that included lifting, welding, trenching, driving, electrical work, and mechanical work. The first phase proved that AI vision was able to identify hazards with a high degree of accuracy. Observations were reported through an online dashboard complete with categorization, with still images and video clips. Data analytics provided insights that Occidental was able to take back to operations personnel. Clay Formation Characterization Using Supervised Machine Learning and Stochastic Multimineral Modeli

Abstract A recent study supporting the formation evaluation of argillaceous units considered for deep geological storage of radioactive waste will be presented in this session. Conducted within the TBO project, this work integrates over 5 km of core data from nine boreholes with a comprehensive logging suite — including Spectral GR, Density–Neutron–PEF–Sigma, and Elemental Spectroscopy — as well as high-resolution core measurements (XRF, MSCL). The workflow highlights: Rigorous depth matching, bias checking, and QC across datasets. Application of supervised machine learning to enhance quantification of key accessory minerals such as smectite, chlorite, and TOC. Integration into a stochastic Multimin inversion, calibrated to core porosity, grain density, and XRD mineralogy. Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis with 800 iterations ensuring robustness of results. The resulting model delivers a continuous, uncertainty-qualified description of mineralogy and porosity — critical for the safety assessment of radioactive waste repositories. Unlocking the Value of Produced Water as a Resource for Upstream Sustainability

Abstract: Produced water is often considered an undesirable by-product during hydrocarbon production due to both economic and environmental constraints. Treating and recycling produced water can unlock its value and serve as an alternative supply to seawater desalination and groundwater consumption, while promoting circular water management 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover). This presentation highlights several success stories on hypersaline produced water treatment, desalination, and its reutilization using a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology for crude oil desalting, fracking, and improved oil recovery. The examples are also shown on the consumption of highly concentrated reject streams obtained from ZLD for drilling and mineral recovery applications to demonstrate 100% circularity in produced water management. Lastly, the potential of mineral-rich ZLD reject streams for CO2 mineralization and lithium extraction will be highlighted in support of the carbon abatement and energy transition initiatives. All these hidden benefits associated with produced water are in great alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water), 7 (clean energy), and 13 (climate action). The “holistic importance” of produced water and its value discovered as “resource” in the talk represents a significant stride towards achieving a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy future. Speaker Bio: Dr. Subhash Ayirala is a petroleum engineering consultant at Saudi Aramco’s EXPEC Advanced Research Center, Saudi Arabia. He has expertise in waterflooding, improved oil recovery, and produced water management with an extended R&D focus on CO2 mineralization and mineral recovery. He previously worked for Shell E&P and has 20 years of experience in the industry. He is the recipient of the prestigious 2025 SPE Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award. Among his many other SPE recognitions, he received the SPE Distinguished Service Award in 2024. He is a member of SPE Reservoir Advisory Committee and editorial board of SPE Journal. He recently joined the SPE R&D Technical Section board as the chair of the Recovery Enhancement program. Deep geothermal exploration in Singapore

Abstract Singapore’s first deep geothermal exploration campaign confirms the presence of a high-gradient, non-volcanic geothermal resource (40–44 °C/km), with temperatures exceeding 120 °C at depths below 2 km and projected to exceed 230 °C at 4–5 km. Techno-economic and life-cycle analyses indicate that next-generation Enhanced and Advanced Geothermal Systems (EGS/AGS) can deliver competitive baseload power and large-scale district cooling, achieving up to 61% cooling cost reduction and lifecycle emissions comparable to solar PV. These results position geothermal as a strategic, indigenous energy solution for Singapore’s net-zero transition, particularly for data centres and dense urban infrastructure. Title : Application of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing in Flowline Monitoring Date: Wednesday, 25 February 2026 Time: 8:00-9:30 AM CST Abstract: Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) has demonstrated significant potential across various fields, such as hydraulic fracturing monitoring, injection and production profiling, and reservoir characterization. Dr. Fan’s research group is at the forefront of expanding DFOS applications to flowline and wellbore monitoring, particularly in multiphase flow monitoring and flowline defect assessment, which will be the focus of this presentation. Multiphase flow monitoring plays a critical role in multiphase flow metering, and flow assurance prediction, assessment, and management, such as liquid accumulation, gas hydrate, etc. This presentation will highlight recent advancement in distributed acoustic sensing applications for liquid loading detection, slug flow monitoring and characterization, using various fiber cable types and deployment methods. Multiphase flow metering and monitoring are highly valuable for production design and optimization, yet significant challenges remain in achieving accurate measurements with DFOS for multiphase flow, that Dr. Fan’s research group is actively addressing. Additionally, the presentation will discuss recent experimental investigations into flowline defect detection, comparing different fiber cable types and pipeline deployment techniques. DFOS surpasses traditional methods by providing non-intrusive, real-time, high temporal resolution, and long-distance measurements, while also withstanding harsh environments that often limit conventional measurement techniques. By leveraging a single sensing technology, DFOS can monitor multiple flowline challenges that traditionally require several different measurement techniques. This capability makes DFOS a more efficient and cost-effective solution for simultaneous flow monitoring and flowline integrity risk assessment. Criticality of Underground Gas Storage – Technology, Economics & Energy Resilience

Underground natural gas storage serves as a critical pillar of U.S. energy reliability, balancing seasonal demand, moderating price volatility, and safeguarding supply during peak consumption, particularly in winter months. However, the U.S. gas storage system is under increasing strain. While natural gas demand is projected to grow by approximately 4.5 Bcf/d through 2030, storage capacity expanded by only 0.1% annually between 2014 and 2023, well below the 1% in the prior decade. As a result, several regions now operate storage utilization exceeding 90%, creating an urgent need for new storage facilities to meet expanding demand from industrial growth, LNG exports, data centers, and renewable energy backup needs. This webinar, the first in a three-part series , introduces the fundamentals of underground gas storage. Topics include storage reservoir types, key operational parameters, working gas and cushion gas concepts, and operating envelopes required to maintain reservoir and well integrity. This sets the stage for subsequent webinars covering the conversion of depleted oil and gas reservoirs to store gas and the application of underground gas storage and CO₂-EOR technologies to carbon capture and sequestration. Together, the series explores how underground storage plays a growing role in energy security, infrastructure planning, and long-term carbon footprint reduction. Cement and Concrete with Reduced Carbon Footprint

Speaker: Dr. Ashok Santra – Sr. Research Science Consultant, Aramco Moderator: Dr. Thomas (TJ) Pisklak - R&D Advisor - Cementing at Halliburton 📌Highlights: 👉 Cement manufacturing accounts for approximately 7% of total anthropogenic CO₂ emissions. A meaningful reduction in this carbon footprint requires a comprehensive approach that combines: (1) carbon dioxide (CO₂) mineralization during the construction of oilwell and civil infrastructure, and (2) partial substitution—up to 50%—of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with pozzolanic materials. 👉 During Portland cement hydration, approximately 15% calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂] is generated, part of it can be directly mineralized into calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) through CO₂ blending. 👉 We developed a proprietary laboratory-scale high-pressure blender capable of introducing CO₂ at pressures up to 1,000 psi. Experimental results confirm the irreversible conversion of CO₂ into stable CaCO₃. 👉 Using this CO₂-blending technology, we successfully formulated oilwell cement slurries that remain fully pumpable while achieving a 15–20% increase in compressive strength. 👉 CO₂ acts as an effective setting accelerator, significantly reducing curing time and improving operational efficiency.

Characterization of Gas-Liquid Downward Flow

Investigation of downward flow is relevant due to the downward inclination of transport lines, injection of chemicals and CO2 as part of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations. Furthermore, carbon capture and underground storage often require transporting and injecting CO2 mixtures within two-phase flow regions. Despite its practical relevance, downward two-phase flow remains one of the least studied areas of multiphase flow with limited experimental data and modeling gaps. Available experimental data indicates that commonly used mechanistic models and commercial simulation tools often fail to accurately predict key flow parameters of interest. This presentation provides an experimental study of low-viscosity oil-air flow, with physical properties close to liquid and gas CO2, in downward inclined pipes. Experimental data covers a wide range of operational conditions and includes flow pattern, liquid holdup, pressure gradient and wall-liquid shear stress. Experimental results are compared with the commonly used commercial software, based on mechanistic models. A detailed analysis is presented for stratified flow, the most frequently observed flow pattern in downward inclinations. Se desempeñó como fiscal del MEM, Dirección de Reversión, área mantenimiento, de 1974 a 1977. Laboró en Intevep, de 1977 a 1997, en Ingeniería de Producción, desarrollando y adaptando tecnologías para PDVSA. Fue asesor de sistemas de LAG y reactivación de campos maduros, en la Costa Oriental del Lago, ex filiales Maraven y Lagoven. Su investigación en Intevep le permitió desarrollar varios equipos/sistemas de producción y LAG, con generación de 11 patentes de invención en EE UU., las cuales fueron registradas en más de 10 países adicionales, un equipo obtuvo licencia de comercialización otorgada por Intevep. Desde 1997 hasta el 2019 laboró para REDA, Schlumberger, desarrollando tecnologías para sistemas de LAG, con generación de 12 nuevas patentes de Invención en EE. UU. Desde el 2010 hasta el 2019, se desempeñó como Dir. de Currículo en LAG y Completación de Pozos, áreas de tutoría, mentoría y adiestramiento, incluyendo más de 250 cursos con alcance a más de 50 países. Bio: Caspar is a Sustainability Specialist with broad experience in climate change consulting, working across diverse and complex environments. His expertise includes Clean Development Mechanism and Voluntary Emission Reduction projects, carbon asset management, and renewable energy investments. He has contributed to carbon finance, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainability consulting, while also developing software and services in the sustainability field for BP, South Pole and currently for Glencore.

CO2 Flow Assurance: from laboratory studies to field applications

Abstract: As a leader in the energy transition, Equinor is committed to decarbonizing its oil and gas operations while developing commercial CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure. Pipeline transport of CO₂ streams plays a central role in this strategy. Building on its expertise as a frontrunner in multiphase flow transport technology for oil and gas production, Equinor has also taken a leading role in R&D activities focused on CO₂ flow assurance —initiating, leading, and actively participating in key research programs. To enable cost-effective and safe CO₂ transport and injection solutions, accurate assessment of CO₂ flow assurance is critical. Equinor employs a systematic app roach that integrates operational insights from existing CCS projects, fundamental understanding of relevant physical phenomena through dedicated experiments, technology gap analysis, and hands-on technology development. In this presentation, Dr. Yang will provide an overview of Equinor’s CCS status and ambitions, share operational experience with single-phase CO₂ pipeline transport, discuss fundamentals and potential risks of CO₂ two-phase flow in pipeline and well injection systems, and outline mitigation strategies. He will also review the current state of CO₂ flow assurance technology and illustrate potential field app lications . Dr. Zhilin Yang is currently a specialist researcher at Equinor, leading the CO₂ flow assurance research and development program. He earned his PhD in Nuclear Engineering, specializing in multiphase flow , boiling, and condensation, in 1993. After a decade of teaching and research in nuclear power safety, he transitioned to petroleum engineering in 2002. From 2002 to 2009, he led the development of the LedaFlow ID code at SINTEF, Norway. Since joining Equinor in 2009, Zhilin has managed R&D programs focused on heavy oil transport and production, encompassing internal experimental studies , model development, and coordination of external R&D activities. Since 2018, he has been leading Equinor’s CO₂ flow assurance R&D program. During this time, he has served as project manager for several joint industry projects addressing CO₂ flow challenges in pipeline transport and well injection systems, with a focus on mitigating risks associated with two-phase CO₂ flow .

Rethinking Wax Risk in Gas Condensate Systems: A Full Field Life Perspective

Abstract: Wax deposition is a well-understood challenge in oil-dominated production systems, supported by decades of laboratory testing, modeling, and field experience. In gas condensate systems, however, wax risk is frequently dismissed early in development due to low liquid volumes, limited fluid sampling, and assumptions rooted in bulk fluid composition. This presentation examines why conventional approaches to wax risk screening can fall short for gas condensate fields, particularly as reservoir and fluid conditions evolve over the life of a development. Through a combination of thermodynamic analysis and field observations, the discussion highlights how changes in produced fluid character over time can shift the wax deposition risk profile in ways that are not captured by traditional early-life assessments. The talk will also address practical considerations for designing mitigation strategies under uncertainty, including a tiered approach to primary, secondary, and tertiary intervention methods. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the factors that drive wax risk in gas condensate systems and a framework for evaluating that risk across the full production lifecycle. Bio: Andrew Yule is a co-founder and managing partner of Pontem Analytics, a global consulting company in the energy industry specializing in combining domain expertise with data-driven solutions. Physicochemical Characterization of Asphaltenes Using Microfluidic Porous Media Prof. S. Lisa Biswal Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CHBE) Rice University, Houston, TX Abstract: Asphaltenes constitute the heaviest, most polar, and most chemically complex fraction of crude oil. Often referred to as the “cholesterol of petroleum,” they can aggregate, precipitate, and deposit under changes in pressure, temperature, composition, or flow conditions, leading to severe clogging challenges in wellbores, near-wellbore regions, pipelines, and production facilities. Despite their industrial importance, the pore-scale mechanisms governing asphaltene aggregation, deposition, and remediation remain difficult to resolve using conventional bulk characterization methods. Microfluidic porous media provide a powerful platform for investigating these processes under well-controlled, optically accessible, and dynamically flowing conditions. By mimicking key features of reservoir rock geometries, microfluidic devices enable direct visualization of asphaltene transport, deposition, and interactions with oil, water, mineral surfaces, and chemical additives at the pore scale. When combined with complementary physicochemical characterization methods, these platforms provide new insight into the coupled effects of fluid composition, interfacial properties, wettability, confinement, and flow on asphaltene behavior. In this presentation, I will describe how microfluidic porous media can be used to obtain new physical, chemical, and dynamic information on asphaltene aggregation and deposition. I will highlight examples in which in situ imaging and microscale analysis reveal mechanisms of asphaltene accumulation and evaluate emerging remediation strategies. These studies demonstrate how pore-scale understanding can inform the development of more effective approaches to mitigate asphaltene-related flow assurance problems in the oil and gas industry. Biography: Dr. Lisa Biswal is the William M. McCardell Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University. At Rice, she leads the Soft Matter Engineering Laboratory, where her research focuses on understanding the rheological behavior of particulate and multiphase systems and connecting these macroscopic properties to the underlying physics of colloidal assemblies, surfactant-stabilized foams and emulsions, and energy-storage composites. Her research aims to generate fundamental insights that enable the design of innovative materials and processes for a broad range of challenges in energy, sustainability, and advanced materials. She is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Scale Deposits from Geothermal Brines: Origin and Control

Talk title: Scale Deposits from Geothermal Brines: Origin and Control Presenter : Oleh Weres, GeoBrineLab Time: Jul 14, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Location: Online Abstract: Undisturbed geothermal brines exist in chemical equilibrium with the reservoir rock. Extraction from the reservoir and harvesting of heat disrupts the state of equilibrium. Removing heat in a heat exchanger to boil an organic fluid (the “binary” process) decreases temperature causing supersaturation and possible deposits; for example, silica, barium sulfate and sulfides of antimony and arsenic. In addition to decreasing temperature, separation of steam concentrates the brine and strips out carbon dioxide, increasing pH and causing calcium carbonate and metal silicates to precipitate, while accelerating polymerization and deposition of silica itself. Precipitation of calcium carbonate and barium sulfate are familiar problems, hardly limited to the geothermal context, effectively controlled using proper inhibitors. The same or similar products are also effective against metal silicates. These inhibitors attach themselves to cations on the surface of a growing crystal, blocking growth. Silica itself, while commonly confused with metal silicates, is totally different in terms of mechanism with limited possibilities for control. Colloidal particles of amorphous silica nucleate dispersed in the brine, grow, and deposit on surfaces forming deposits which are cemented by further deposition of silica between the particles. Amorphous silica contains no cations, so there is no place for conventional scale inhibitors to grab on to. They are at best indirectly effective by blocking formation of metal silicate particles which seed silica particles. Silica deposits are most often controlled by limiting temperature drop and/or acidifying the brine, oftentimes causing corrosion. In addition to temperature, the solubility of As and Sb sulfides is controlled by hydrogen sulfide in the brine. Stripping out hydrogen sulfide when steam is separated increases the solubility of these minerals. These processes are illustrated by modeling brine chemistry in geothermal power systems of several configurations, predicting a variety of scale deposits. Biography : Oleh Weres has more than 50 years' experience in the geothermal power industry. Oleh holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago and was a Miller Institute fellow in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. His professional experience includes 14 years in the Earth Sciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 20 years as the owner of the Sonoma Research Company in Napa, CA, and 14 years in the Sales and Research and Development departments of ChemTreat. Currently he is the owner of GeoBrineLab, a consulting and contract research firm based in Reno, NV. He has researched a wide range of topics pertaining to the chemistry of the geothermal power industry, including scaling and corrosion control, silica, hydrogen sulfide emissions, arsenic and antimony sulfides, and recovery of lithium and metals from brine. In addition to his extensive laboratory experience in physical, inorganic, analytical, and electrochemistry, he has developed computer programs to model geothermal brines, condensers, water cooling, and chemical treatments. He has contributed to The Geysers, Imperial Valley, and dozens of other geothermal projects throughout North America and worldwide. He has also investigated selenium in the environment, advanced oxidation processes, corrosion in nuclear power plants, and defense applications. July 2026 Monthly Meeting: Global Shale 2.0 + the Return of International Unconventional Exploration

Abstract: A new round of global shale exploration is unfolding - and this time things are different. The last attempt ended abruptly. The success of US shale basins last decade curtailed global unconventional exploration as growth-focused E&Ps retreated to the Permian in the early 2010s instead. But the US shale sector is maturing. Many operators seeking organic growth must look beyond North America as part of their portfolio renewal strategy - and the conditions are now more favorable. Today, there's no new major growth play in the US to compete with. Technology has slashed costs. Explorers are more selective. Regulators are willing to adjust terms. And with geopolitical tensions spotlighting energy security, global shale 2.0 could gather serious momentum. Investors and undersupplied energy markets are watching with interest. This presentation sets out why international shale exploration is back in focus and why it’s building on last decade’s experience rather than starting with a blank sheet of paper. The Vaca Muerta and Jafurah Basin have proven international shale plays can be successful. What’s next? Speaker Bio: Robert Clarke is Head of Americas Upstream Analysis for Wood Mackenzie. He helps lead valuation modeling, portfolio benchmarking, asset evaluation and M&A analysis for the firm’s Upstream and Carbon Management segment. Joining Wood Mackenzie in 2005, Robert supported the firm’s buildout of Lower 48 coverage during the shale exploration boom. He managed WoodMac’s Global Unconventional Play Service from 2009 to 2015, which involved analogue characterizations and valuations of exploratory shale assets. Robert’s focus areas today include technology and the future cost of supply, working alongside Supermajors and bulge bracket banks to understand upstream investment opportunities in the Americas. He graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M University in 2001 with a BA in Geology and received an MBA in 2005 from the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. He is an adjunct professor at the Neeley School of Business at TCU, via the Ralph Lowe Energy Institute.

Thin reservoir sands, complex fluid behavior, and long horizontal targets demand high well placement accuracy, while congested field layouts and tight cost constraints further limit operational flexibility. These factors often make conventional development approaches suboptimal, requiring more integrated and technology-driven solutions. This talk presents a holistic approach to transforming marginal fields into viable assets through the integration of advanced drilling technologies, real-time data acquisition, and collaborative workflows. Key technologies include Measurement While Drilling (MWD/LWD), Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS), extended reach drilling, and anti-collision techniques, all working together to enhance wellbore positioning, reduce drilling risks, and improve reservoir contact. Real-time monitoring and cross-functional collaboration enable dynamic decision-making, allowing teams to respond effectively to subsurface uncertainties during execution. SPE DL_Navigating Uncertainty for Value with examples from petrophysics

Abstract: Throughout a field’s life cycle, different factors will contribute to reservoir uncertainty. As reservoirs mature, petrophysical properties often become a major source of uncertainty, especially as marginal rocks and complex fluid variations become increasingly important. Despite its importance, petrophysical uncertainty has received relatively little focus in the literature, yet it should be a core part of subsurface workflows. This lecture will present examples which highlight where petrophysical uncertainty has proven to be critical. By understanding uncertainty and analysing sensitivity, projects and businesses can improve outcomes. Risks tied to uncertainties can be managed more effectively, increasing the likelihood of achieving the expected business value. By identifying key uncertainties and sensitivities early in the process, teams can allocate resources more effectively and focus on areas that offer the largest potential impact. This early integration helps avoid last-minute changes, minimizes delays, and ensures that projects remain aligned with both technical and financial objectives. Integrating uncertainty into decision-making is effective at countering bias, strengthens project success and reduces unexpected challenges, allowing for resilient, well-informed decisions. The one idea that members should take away from this lecture is that uncertainty should be addressed prior to detailed studies and be continuously and fully integrated into subsurface workflows using data driven approaches. This will support the prioritisation of work, highlight future data requirements and ensure the impact of uncertainty is assessed at core, well, and model levels, minimising the impact of bias, leading to improved project performance and project outcomes. Biography: Russell Farmer has more than 30 years of oil and gas industry experience including twelve years with Shell, six years as a consultant and twelve years with bp. In bp, Russell led teams in Iraq, Angola, Global Assurance, Middle East Oil and as Discipline Leader for Global Subsurface Solutions, Modelling and Rock Properties. Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer Program Modern Open Hole Wireline Operations: Safer, More Efficient Outcomes with Proactive, Holistic Planning Lee Hyson Gaia Earth Group Abstract: Open hole wireline logging continues to be the preferred, cost-effective method of formation evaluation in our industry. But as wellbore geometry, trajectory, and logging objectives become more complex, the longer and heavier logging tool strings introduce greater deployment risks, operational uncertainty, and costs. Traditional wireline logging job planning based on tension simulations is no longer sufficient because other hazards can be left undetected with potentially costly consequences. This lecture presents a modern-holistic methodology, already widely adopted, that integrates wellbore geometry, trajectory, formation properties, operational requirements, and insights from databases of historical wireline jobs that include well designs and operational outcomes. Attendees will gain understanding of a data-driven framework for evaluating deployment risks, including quantifying differential and mechanical sticking, along with practical guidance for safer and more reliable wireline operations. Biography: Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and has completed the Stanford Graduate School of Business LEAD program. He began his career as a wireline engineer and has spent more than two decades supporting operations globally, including the Rocky Mountains, Southeast Asia, the Marcellus, the Gulf of America, Mexico, the Caribbean and the North Sea. Since joining Gaia in 2011, his work has focused on strengthening wireline job design and execution by developing practical frameworks, modeling approaches, and field methods for challenging wells. He has provided wellsite QA/QC support on more than 175 field operations and has contributed to the creation and refinement of several of the planning and risk-assessment workflows highlighted in this talk. Lee has authored technical papers and frequently delivers in-house training on applying systematic, model-based strategies to improve wireline performance.

SPE Brazil Flow Assurance Technology Congress 2026

Flow assurance is a technical discipline focused on safety and efficient transportation of fluids to their destination. The flow assurance activities involve managing and mitigating many issues that might happen in the field. To promote the exchange of experience among professionals, the Flow Assurance Technical committee of SPE Brazil section organized the 1st Flow Assurance Technology Congress (FATC) in November 2022.The event was a huge success, with more than 230 professionals (20 countries) from industry and academia, over 100 abstracts received and 13 sponsoring companies supporting the event. The FATC second edition will cover traditional topics in flow assurance as well as its connection with digital transformation and energy transition. Flow assurance provides a set of technologies to support reducing carbon footprint in offshore operations by allowing for example long tiebacks to existing facilities. It also supports Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization (CCUS) operations by ensuring safety and efficient transport of CO2 streams from any industrial source. Effective flow assurance practices are essential for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of energy production and transportation systems, and this will drive innovations such as smart sensors, predictive analytics, and special materials to improve the efficiency and sustainability of energy transportation systems. This presentation explores subsurface mechanisms, drilling strategies, and key geologic formations hosting hydrogen reserves. Special focus is given to tectonic settings, ultramafic rock zones, and rift basins favorable for hydrogen generation. The talk highlights emerging exploration efforts, regulatory frameworks, and the role of hydrogen in national energy strategies. Biography: Bez is Vice President of Energy Security in Government Contracts for CyberWorX Energy, focused on national security intelligence and strategic consulting for implementing energy technology. Bez has 15 years of experience in the energy sector – from hydrocarbons to renewables. Previously, Bez has worked as a consultant, energy technologist, and strategist for market research firms, service companies, and oil/gas operators. Additionally, Bez has experience as a Sr. Researcher in academia (over 50 publications, 4 patents, 1 book). Bez is active in SPE as a committee member for ATCE and ADIPEC. Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer Program From land to sea: Successful completions technology transfer from onshore to offshore wells (past, present, and future?) Sanjay Vitthal Retired from Shell in March 2025 Abstract: Offshore and deepwater field developments have historically in higher permeability (100+ md) reservoirs. So, what interest should offshore completion engineers have in completion practices in wells in onshore shale reservoirs that are in 1/1000th to 1/millionth the permeability? More than we think! This presentation will start with the past and illustrate via case histories of how innovations/practices initially developed for onshore wells have helped unlock and improve the economics of offshore wells. This talk will also show examples of how practices originally deployed in darcy shales are continuing to improve today's offshore completions. Finally, we will explore how shale-based technology can help unlock some of the future economic challenges associated with brownfields and also some of the recent deepwater discoveries in lower permeability reservoirs. The talk will also illustrate, with an example, the risks of blindly copying onshore completion technology without considering the unique challenges of offshore wells. Guidelines on how to transfer completion technologies from shales to offshore are provided “What is the one idea you would like the members to take away from this lecture? We should pay attention to developments in reservoirs (such as shales) that may appear to be completely different to offshore reservoirs but offer opportunities to improve economics. Keep an open mind and stay connected via SPE and other avenues to ideas and practices. Biography: Dr Sanjay Vitthal recently retired from Shell as the Principal Technical Expert for Hydraulic Fracturing Design and Analysis. He has 33 years of industry experience in Hydraulic Fracturing, Sand Control and Stimulation. His interests are in hydraulic fracturing, sand control, fluids, diagnostics, formation damage, and well performance. He has written 35 papers on the above topics and holds 10 patents. He been active in the SPE as a technical editor, contributing editor on 2 monographs, and as member of conferences, workshop, and forum committees. SPE DL_Log-Based Permeability: What Are We Measuring?

Abstract: The estimation of rock permeability is essential for modeling reservoir performance and production history in oil and gas fields, as well as supporting reservoir management and development across various sectors, including geothermal and underground storage projects. Despite decades of research, accurately determining true permeability remains a challenge. The results are often marked by significant uncertainty. Effective permeability and flow potential in new wells are typically assessed using core and well testing. Advancements in logging technology and data analytics have expanded log evaluation techniques, enabling the development of innovative interpretation workflows, which allow for more representative calculations of permeability from logs. This lecture first reviews and compares existing permeability prediction methods and logbased typing approaches, emphasizing their advantages, applicability, and limitations when applied to heterogeneous rock systems. Apparent discrepancies in computed permeability profiles derived from various log data sources and domains are examined collaboratively, serving as a learning tool to enhance the understanding of heterogeneous pore connectivity and the distribution of flow pathways. Subsequently, integration of the latest advancements in hardware and evaluation techniques is introduced through a field example that provides a comprehensive multi-scale workflow to deliver understanding of the permeability field, connectivity, well deliverability, and recovery. I would like the audience to take away the idea that permeability is a critical parameter throughout all stages of reservoir management; being pertinent to a broad spectrum of disciplines and energy sectors. Biography: Chiara Cavalleri is a Petrophysics Advisor at SLB in Saudi Arabia, where she brings extensive expertise in wireline logging, formation evaluation, and well data interpretation. Her work is centered on leveraging advanced technologies, implementing multidisciplinary workflows, delivering integrated solutions, and coaching. With years of field logging experience, Chiara transitioned into petrophysics, holding key technical roles across West Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia before establishing herself in the Middle East. Chiara holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Pavia, Italy. She has contributed to the industry through numerous technical publications on reservoir characterization across diverse applications, including oil & gas, UGS, CCS, and geothermal energy. She is also a patent holder and actively shares her expertise through industry technical events and workshops.
