Hitting the Sweetspot:
Developments in Reservoir Navigation

Dr. Andreas Hartmann

Placing the wellbore in the optimal spot is required to maximize the production of reservoirs. Reservoir navigation, also know as geosteering, is key to achieve this goal. Real-time information from the bottom hole assembly will be transmitted to surface, processed, and interpreted to place wells relative to geologic features of the reservoir, such as top and base of the reservoir. Starting point for placing the well  is always the definition of the well placement objective. Based on that, an approach to steer the well is selected. Several methods are part of the standard toolbox. Traditionally, the primary purpose in is the avoidance of reservoir exit, requiring the capability of detecting remote beds that are not intersected by the wellbore. Induction type resistivity measurements used in logging while drilling (LWD) application do provide this capability, current technologies typically allow interpretation of the boundaries nearest to the wellbore.

More complex reservoir geometries and advanced applications such as mapping of reservoir thickness require a new approach. In recent years new technology has become available that is sensitive to formation further away from the wellbore. This opens up new applications and changes the way the task of geosteering is approached. The technological development will be discussed. Advances include development of the sensor hardware as well as the new algorithmic concepts to interpret large amounts of data coming from the BHA. The technology has now reached maturity and examples will be used to demonstrate this.
