Overview:
Each year SPE International awards various scholarships and fellowships open to Student members worldwide thanks to support from AIME and the SPE Foundation. These are awarded annually and each year we work with a distinguished panel of judges who use their experience and expertise to review potential candidates.
We received a lot of applications each year, but are only able to offer a small selection of awards. Because of this we seek a large and diverse range of judges to ensure the best candidates are selected.
Experience and Skillset:
• All Applicants must be SPE Professional members in good standing.
• A strong academic background is desirable, ideally with experience with multiple regions or universities.
• An awareness of academic requirements and standards expected from students.
• A methodical mindset
• A good cultural awareness of different regions
• Experience of ethical and un-bias assessment
Duties:
All applications will be vetted by SPE staff to ensure candidates meet with eligibility requirements, such as membership status, and sanction laws. Judges will only be expected to review candidates on the information available in the application forms.
Before assignments are given, Judges will be asked to confirm availability for each specific group of candidates including; Undergraduate applications, Post graduate applications and  nominated applications. Judges are not required to judge all rounds, however the more judges we have the more applications can be distributed.
Judges will be assigned a set of applications using our OpenWater platform, and will be expected to review each application and score each submission based on set criteria.
Judges will be given a range of applications and will be expected to review their assigned application by the set deadlines.
Once judging is completed, results will be tallied and the final results will be discussed to confirm the final outcome. If there is uncertainty from the results a second round of judging, or conference call to debate results will be held.
Successful applications are selected based on a majority ruling by all judges who participated in reviews.
Judges who know the applicant must recuse themselves from judging, but can continue to review other applications for a group that the known applicant is considered for.
Time requirement:
Judges will be asked if they have availability for each group of judging including:
• December - January (Nico Van Wingen – Nominated Applications)
• April - June (Undergraduate Applications – Gus Archie and Donald G Russell)
• May - August (Post Graduate Applications – Henry DeWitt Smith and Imomoh)
Depending on the number of judges available, between 15-25 applications per group are typically assigned to each judge. Each application takes between 10-15 minutes to review and score. This can be estimated as a range of 2.5 hours to 6 hours per group, plus additional hour for any deliberation and additional assignments required for additional rounds. Each application has a minimum of 3 judges to review them.
