Unlocking Bypassed Resources on the NCS through Coiled Tubing Drilling Solutions

Marco Lallemand |  Global Product Manager for Coiled Tubing Drilling |  Baker Hughes

Abstract

In a landscape where global oil and gas demand is forecasted to remain constant and exploration investments have declined, the industry is under pressure to maximize the value of existing mature assets while also reducing its environmental footprint. However, with production rates declining, operators are forced to decide whether to shut down production and plug and abandon (P&A) these wells or explore cost-effective revitalization methods instead of drilling new wells. Driving incremental production of hydrocarbons beyond initial phases of extraction requires navigating challenges such as complex reservoir properties, isolated reservoir compartments, undrained areas, inefficient sweeps, fluid migration, and limited surface slots. Coiled Tubing Drilling (CTD) has been used for over 30 years to improve production rates and overall recovery in aging fields. This technology has evolved in response to changing operational objectives and increasing technical requirements, becoming a robust and reliable solution for enhancing production in mature fields. This presentation discusses the latest CTD technology, global experience, and how it can be applied on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
