Designing and Operating Water Injection Systems in the North Sea: A Critical Review of Current Practices
By Fred Santarelli, Geomec

Abstract:

Geomec has recently completed a large Joint Industry Project on water injection monitoring under the DEMO 2000 NFR’s umbrella. The project analysed 21 wells across 7 fields in the NCS and UKCS at different stages of the field development process. As such it provided an excellent sample, from which to critically review current practices with respect to the design and operating of water injection systems.

The surprising key finding was that water injection was sub-optimum in 85% of the cases analysed during the project, even though the industry has decades of experience. Having pinpointed these shortcomings, the analysis focused on finding improvement possibilities and two areas were discovered.

The first one was the identification of windows of opportunity, where key parameters can be acquired leading to vast improvements in water injection efficiency.

The second one was the identification of means to monitor injection efficiency and the capacity to pinpoint accurately where the deterioration occurs.

All aspects are illustrated with concrete field data.
