Formation Damage: What Causes It, Why Should We Care, And How Do We Visualise & Quantify it?
By Justin Green, Formation Damage Consultant at Premier Corex

Abstract
Most, if not all, of us are aware of “Formation Damage” as a concept that should be avoided, but how does it manifest in the reservoir? Can a better understanding of Formation Damage reduce risk and uncertainty in the field? This session will illustrate the subject with real-world examples and case studies, covering:

  • Why should we be thinking about Formation Damage?
  • When and where does it happen, and what are the main mechanisms that we see?
  • How do we investigate, visualise, and quantify it, and can these learnings be used to improve field decision-making?
  • Can the techniques be applied to new focus areas like carbon capture?

A case study from an upcoming SPE paper will be also be used to illustrate how an operator used targeted studies to identify issues and find solutions for current and future wells.

Biography

BSc degree in Geology and Petroleum Geology from the University of Aberdeen.

Worked for Premier Oilfield Group (previously known as COREX) since graduating in 2000 within the Formation Damage laboratory, geological analysis group.

Currently involved in technical support for operators worldwide as well as laboratory and geological test design, presentation of reports, and delivering training courses.

Part of the team which developed a new Micro-CT scanning technique, and co-authored and presented a paper on it at the 2012 SPE European Formation Damage.

Lead author on a recent SPE paper (presented at the 2017 SPE Bergen One Day Seminar), written by COREX and Aker BP, which presented a case study on the nature of drilling mud invasion and clean-up in a Norwegian field.
