Young Professionals from Qatar’s Energy Industry Gather for Process Safety Event

On Sunday 11th of October, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section hosted its second Young Professionals in Energy Event. The session, which focused on process safety management fundamentals, was held at the Sheraton Hotel Doha, and was attended by local oil and gas young professionals and students.
“Over the last decades, process safety management has played an increasingly critical role in the safe operation of oil and gas facilities. This was a great opportunity for young professionals to expand their knowledge on what is process safety and why and how we manage process safety efficiently.” said Mike Gunningham Program Chair of SPE Qatar Section, Head of Subsurface Support Team, Maersk Oil Qatar.
The title of the presentation was “Process Safety Management Fundamentals”, presented by Mr. Dr. Luc Véchot - an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Managing Director of the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center – Qatar.
The presentation gave an overview of the principles and practices of process safety management through a historical review of incidents that defined process safety. The concept of risk assessment and their application in the oil and gas industry was also explained in details by the speaker.

 

   
   

Texas A & M University Qatar, SPE Student Chapter wins 2015 Outstanding Student Chapter Award

Texas A&M University the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Qatar Student Chapter has won the Outstanding Chapter of the year Award for the Middle East Region. It was announced by the SPE President Helge Hove Haldorsen this week by sending below letter to the Chapter President - Ahmed Rauf.

This award is the highest honor for a chapter, recognizing those that are exemplary in categories such as industry engagement, community service, operations and professional development. There are hundreds of chapters in the region and it is a remarkable achievement for Texas A&M Qatar SPE Student Chapter to win.

The Student Chapter works in close relation with the SPE Qatar Section and receives regular support under the patronage of Sheikh Faisal Al Thani. Ahmed Rauf contributed to the award by organizing events and winning regional competitions such as the Student Paper Contest and Petrobowl throughout the year. On campus, his team of Student Chapter Officers organized events and engaged students and the community on a regular basis throughout their terms in office. Rauf will travel to USA to represent Qatar at the International Student Paper Contest , the Petrobowl, and to receive this prestigious award along with his team (pictured) during the Student Awards Luncheon at SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Houston, Texas, USA.
