"Gas Interference Effects on Rod Strings"

Scott Krell, Weatherford

Abstract:

In this presentation, Scott will examine gas interference in sucker rod pumps and its impact on dyna card readings. He will discuss the use of rod design software to simulate and predict buckling at various pump fill scenarios. He will review how his experience has revealed the limitations of designs based solely on pumped-off conditions and highlights the risks of overlooking gas-fluid interactions. By accurately modeling these effects, his discussion will underscore the importance of incorporating gas interference into pump design to enhance reliability, optimize performance, and mitigate premature rod failure.

Biography:

With 27 years of hands-on experience in artificial lift and production operations, Scott built a robust career centered on product development, well optimization, and analysis. Working at industry leaders like Cameron International, contributing to a specialized division, where he focused on pioneering alternative rod lift technology and later expanding his expertise at Schlumberger. Today, as one of Weatherford’s Global Product Line Champions for Reciprocating Rod Lift and Subsurface Technology, Scott continues to drive innovation and operational excellence, leveraging decades of industry expertise to optimize well performance and deliver impactful technological advancements.
