“Industry 4.0 in Oil and Gas Applications:
Intelligent Production Monitoring and Optimization Systems (iPMOS)”
By Salis S. Aprilian, Ph.D.

ABSTRACT

Industry Revolution 4.0 creates opportunities and challenges for us to work more effectively and efficiently (faster, cheaper, safer, accurate, centralize and accessible)that is driven by the latest digital technologies, such asIndustrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Big Data Analytics, Cloud Platform, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Twins, Robotics, 3D Printing, etc.

Oil and gas industries is well known to be behind in digital technology development compared to e-commerce, social media, medical science, telecommunication or transportation Industries.Even though, based on its history, the upstream (exploration and production) industry has been advanced in interpreting the seismic data usinga digital technology. The 2-D and 3-D seismic data have been used commonly to guide directional/horizontal wells in 1980s.Moreover, the first completely steerable bottom hole assembly was developed to have a high performance down hole motor and stabilisation in drilling activities.

In 2000s, the intelligent production monitoring and optimization systems have been developedfor an end-to-end solution by integrating subsurface and surface facility data. Through implementing wireless network and satellite connection, multiple automated offshore platforms can be controlled from a central location or anywhere in the world through a secure cloud network platform; resulting in a reduction of personnel needed to monitor and optimize the individual platforms. This technology brought together reservoir, well, and surface facility models to form an integrated system for reservoir and well optimization.

The latest digital real-time technology has driven the effort to automate the routine and repetitive tasks which therefore allows engineers to use their limited time resources more effectively in the analysis and solution of engineering problems to maximize production, optimize the capital and operating costs, reducerisk, and improve the HSSE (health, safety, security, and environment) aspects. It is not only talking about technology applications, but also changing the culture (people and organization) and business processes in a digital transformation framework.

This presentation will discuss the implementation of Intelligent Production Monitoring and Optimization Systems as a part of Industry Revolution 4.0 that resulted in a significant additional net present value (NPV) during the project execution. It shows that this implementation is merely suitable for Gross-Split scheme contract that requires innovations through cost-effective based solution programs. ***
