Abstract:

As fiber-optic sensing technology and its application in upstream oil and gas matures, a growing number of operators are looking to enhance their assets, reduce operating costs, and gain other valuable insights in the downhole environment. Distributed Acoustic and Temperature Sensing (DAS and DTS) takes a standard fiber-optic cable instrumented downhole and turns it into an array of sensors that provides continuous, full wellbore coverage of valuable diagnostic data. Fiber-optic sensing has a wide range of application across the life of the well, from completion optimization to production logging to abandonment. This presentation will provide an overview of the measurement principles of DAS and DTS, how wells are instrumented with fiber-optics, how fiber-optic data is acquired and processed, and how the data is used to drive decisions in asset and field development. Real world examples and case studies will be discussed where operators have made significant improvements in production and operating costs which have been applied across their businesses.

Speaker Bio:

Kevin Boone P.Eng Chief Technology Officer for Kore-Optics Ltd., focused on new technology development and its application to upstream oil and gas. He has worked in the fiber-optic sensing industry for seven years with extensive experience in DAS and DTS data analytics, product development, and technical support of sales and operations. Over the years, Kevin has worked on dozens of fiber-optic projects across the world through a wide range of downhole applications.
