Abstract:

Low hydrocarbon-liquid recovery factors observed in multi-fracked stimulated rock volumes (SRV) motivates operators to consider improvements in exploitation strategies.  One of the strategies under intense investigation is gas-cycling enhanced oil recovery (GCEOR), which involves alternating gas injection cycles with production cycles in the same well(s), commonly called Huff and Puff.  EOG Resources reports excellent results from their field applications of this technology.

This presentation describes some of the parameters that should be considered in the development of projects including the role of injection-gas composition, injection pressure, soak time and the degree of SRV depletion before Huff and Puff begins.

Speaker Bio:
Brent Thomas has worked in Enhanced Oil Recovery for his entire career. Thermal recovery of heavy oils and chemical EOR occupied some of his efforts but most of his EOR career was focused on gas injection, including Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide, and multi-component hydrocarbon gas in both vertical and horizontal reservoirs. Huff and Puff CO2 for heavy oil EOR and conventional-reservoir strategies such as water-alternating-gas (WAG), water-gas co-injection and gas-cycling liquids recovery received most of his attention.  For the past two years, he has concentrated his interest in Huff and Puff gas injection in unconventional reservoirs and established a multi-company consortium for the study and development of Gas Cycling EOR (GCEOR) design.

Brent and his wife Carolyn are parents of six children, and grandparents to twelve grandchildren.  Born in High River, Alberta, he has spent all but seven years of his life in the Calgary area.  Educated at the University of Calgary and Washington University, he holds degrees in Chemical Engineering.  He was a principal of Hycal Energy Research from 1981 until 2004 when Hycal was sold to Weatherford.  He has traveled and lectured worldwide throughout his career.  He is currently a consultant and contractor to the petroleum industry.
