Series Overview:
This series isn’t about the edge of your desk it’s about the edge of your work data universe. Edge computing pushes applications, data and computing power away from office – away from 10 square blocks of dense optic networks – away from the comfort of a Plus 15 connected office – away from reliable cell service. Data is gathered, devices monitor data streams, and decisions get made on the edge. This is a four-part series exploring different opportunities to use knowledge gained from the edge to further push the limits of our work data universe.

Session 3 of 4

Abstract:

The Oil and Gas Drilling Service Sector has struggled for decades to differentiate the value it delivers and correspondingly be rewarded for it. Pason Systems has ridden this roller coaster for its 40 years of existence.

Technology is changing quickly. New opportunities and threats are emerging with grand labels like Machine Learning and Automation. For new technologies to succeed, the drilling industry’s traditional model for delivering technology and services (execution!) need to more fully address the true cost of drilling, the remoteness of operations, and the “nature” of qualified people on site.

Pason utilizes machine learning algorithms to automate three aspects of the drilling operation: kick and loss detection (Smart Alarms), remote directional automation (Directional System, ), and drilling optimization (ExxonMobil DAS). In all cases, the effort to solve issues with the underlying technology is far out shadowed by the challenges of workflows and execution.

Pason will share the above three case studies on the experience of introducing these products to the drilling industry illustrating the unique challenges the drilling industry faces to execute on emerging technologies and provide clues to the recipe for successful commercialization.
