Well Spacing is fundamental to development and changes to the spacing regulations in Alberta have been occurring since 1931. Obviously, there have been many changes and with each change wells drilled under the previous rules and approvals were generally grandfathered. The spacing regulations have remained largely unchanged since October 2011. However, in February 2015 the AER issued their first Subsurface Order in the Montney. The subsurface orders are intended to provide maximum flexibility in developing emerging resource plays.
This presentation will cover the various layers of spacing currently in place, how they pertain to horizontal versus vertical drilling development in and outside the subsurface orders and when a Directive 065 application is required to ensure your well is drilled on target and in compliance with the existing spacing regulation and approval.
