Abstract:

Despite improving commodity prices and increasing production, the Canadian oil and gas industry is still facing many hurdles that it needs to overcome in order to grow its sector.

After ramping up natural gas production to the highest level in a decade, operators hit a demand wall, resulting in a major price drop in the summer of 2017 that has carried through into 2018. Domestic demand is not growing and traditional export markets in the US have almost disappeared. Additional demand for gas such as LNG exports is of utmost importance for the natural gas industry. Lack of oil export pipelines began cutting into the oil recovery as well, with discounted prices cutting revenues and cash flows to invest in growth projects. New export capacity is essential to enable Canada to fully benefit from its hydrocarbon resources. In a carbon-constrained world, the development also depends on how the industry will address the environmental factors.

The presenter will talk about CERI’s outlook for the Canadian oil and gas industry and how these and other challenges might impact the sector.
