Abstract:

My colleagues and I have recently performed modeling studies to help
operators optimize hydraulic fracture design and field development in
seven major shale plays in the US – Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken,
Marcellus, Utica, Powder River, and Meramac. We use a simulation tool
that integrates hydraulic fracture and reservoir simulation in a
single, seamless simulation. Simulations include a detailed wellbore
model, perforation pressure drop, a detailed proppant transport
algorithm, transport of water solutes such as friction reducer and
gel, and 3D multiphase flow (black oil or compositional). We set up a
model, match to field data, and then run alternative scenarios to
optimize return on investment. In this talk, I share learnings on what
is needed to successfully model and optimize recovery in shale. Topics
include: (1) trade-off between limited-entry and stress shadowing, (2)
processes affecting symmetric/asymmetric fracture growth, (3) proppant
trapping, (4) field-scale fracture toughness, (5) complex DFN versus
planar fracture modeling, (6) applications of rate-transient analysis,
(7) fracture turning and stress anisotropy, and (8) stress layering.

Speaker Bio:

Mark McClure founded ResFrac Corporation in 2015 to help operators
maximize value through application of advanced geomechanics and
reservoir simulation. Previously, Mark was an assistant professor at
the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Petroleum and
Geosystems Engineering and earned a PhD in Energy Resources
Engineering at Stanford University. Mark has been honored with several
awards, including: Best Paper in Geophysics from the SEG, the Hank
Ramey Award from Stanford University, and SPE Regional Awards for
Young Member Outstanding Service and for Completions Optimization and
Technology. Mark has been recognized as an outstanding reviewer by SPE
Journal, SPE REE, Journal of Geophysical Research, and Geology.
