Abstract:

Understanding “fracture driven interactions” (a.k.a. frac hits) and how to mitigate them is becoming an industry priority.  In this presentation, the root causes of FDIs, terms and definitions will be discussed.  Methods to collect and interpret the data will be presented along with case studies and current mitigation techniques.

Data collected from offsetting wells that experience pressure communication during fracturing operations from near-by new wells contains much information about the type FDI event that occurred and about the reservoir of the existing well.  It can be ascertained how quickly the FDI event started after pumping commenced which quantifies how close the old existing fractures are to the new well.  The build-up slope and the fall-off pressure slope can indicate how depleted the existing well or wells are.  Stress shadowing can be seen and quantified.  If the collected data is organized by reservoir and area, predictions can be made in future infill completion operations by observing new FDI events and comparing them to historical data. This enables the operator to determine if changes in the completion plan are needed. Regarding the data as just a “yes” or “no” answer is a gross under-utilization of the information.
