“UL Lafayette Petroleum Engineering Smart Drilling Offerings”

Randy Andres, IADC Well Control Instructor, Laboratory Manager, ULL Petroleum Engineering Department

November 12, 2024; Noon – 1 PM CST Lunch Served at 11:30 AM
Petroleum Club of Lafayette -  111 Heymann Blvd, Lafayette, LA

Abstract

UL Lafayette Petroleum Engineering now has a Smart Oilfield concentration to address the student demand to meet employer needs. The first in the nation. The smart oilfield concentration will develop student’s skills and competencies by integrating the current petroleum engineering program’s sub-surface expertise with smart drilling, machine learning, and data analytics for more cost-efficient oil exploration, production, and management.

Smart Drilling is a key component of this concentration. Application of the industry standard Halliburton’s Landmark software – Engineer’s Desktop (EDTTM) is used. The software applications share a common database – Engineer’s Data Model (EDMTM). There is real-time input to create a digital twin while drilling.

Topics include:

  • Compass – wellbore design, survey management, collision avoidance.
  • CasingSeat – casing setting depths, casing/hole sizes.
  • StressCheck – casing tension, collapse, burst, triaxial loading.
  • CasingWear – drilling assemblies, wear modeling.
  • WellPlan – hydraulics, torque & drag, BHA dynamics, cementing, well control.
  • OpenWells – operations reporting, real-time inputs, creating a digital twin.

A brief overview of topics covered in Smart Drilling with screenshots of the applications will be presented.

Biography

Randy Andres is a West Texas native and a Texas A&M petroleum engineering graduate. He attended school part-time while working full-time at Delta Drilling in the Bryan-College Station area. Upon graduation, after 7 years, he joined Sperry Drilling as a directional driller. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks with various service providers as a drilling coordinator, drilling manager, and independent consultant.

As an accomplished IADC WellSharp well control instructor, he achieved IADC WellSharp provider accreditation for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette – the first petroleum engineering program in the world.

After over 45 years, Randy has been involved in drilling thousands of wells, many in adverse conditions, and setting numerous records in drilling. His mechanical aptitude has aided in the development of many commercial drilling products and improvements. He is currently the faculty advisor for the drilling student chapters IADC, AADE, and SPE Drillbotics.

Meal headcount DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, October 2nd.
